= The World Full of Death Traps. According to the American Ana lyst, the worst. enemies of the human race are the doctors, who try to pro long our miserable existence in a world full of death traps. One medi co tells you not to cat or drink what you relish, because you will eat or drink too much. Another says you must only cat what you fancy, be cause otherwise you will bolt your food without giving to each morsel the thirty-six mastications which me necessary for digestion. You must wear a respirator over your mouth, a pad on your chest, au i a swarth_ of flannel round your loins. If you live in town, you will die of fog; if you go to the country, you will be poisoned by bad draiuage; if you drink water, you ore tempting the typhoid fiend; milk spells scarlatina, and tea cake is sudden death. Do you shun these tempestuous pleasures of the senses and take refuge in the recreations ot the mind? Do you borrow a novel from the circulating library? That is to import the germs of disease into a healthy household. The volume in •your hands may have been perused by a person recovering from an infectious illness!—Scientific American. Convention of Sheriffs. The following call explains itself: “The sherifls of Georgia are request ed to meet iu the Court House in At lanta, Ga., at 12 o’clock, July 10th next.” Signed. L. P. Thomas, Sheriff of Fulton Co. N. A. McGinnis, J. W. Weir, J. A. Hurst, J. A. Hillsiuau W. H. Phillips J. (9. Beauchamp Gordon Clarke Thomas Morgan Jasper Butts A NEW ROAD TO FLORIDA. It 1* to Run from Chattanooga via Col umbus and Albany. New York, June 8.—It is general ly known in southern railroad circles that certain enterprising capitalists have of late been interesting them selves actively in the establishment of an independent tnrough line from Chattanooga, Tenu., to the heart of Florida. The recent trip of Alfred Sully, Simon Borg and K. K. Dow to the south was currently reported to be in furtherance of the project. A big bond sale, which was affected here to day, is substantial evidence of the progress iu the enterprise. W. B. Lowe, a prominent railroad contractor ot Georgia, has been here for a week in close conference with several lead ing financiers, and to-day a syndicate' was formed, to whom Mr Lowe sold the entire issue of the bonds of the Columbus Southern road, which is a line running from Columbus to Al bany, Ga. This is to be a link iu the now system. At Albany connection will tie made with H. B. Plant’s Savaunah, Florida ard Western, and once into Florida some sort of alli ance will probably be made with President Duval’s system, which was formerly the Florida Railway and Navigation Company. State papers will please copy. The purpose of the convention is to bring about a more thorough under standing between the sheriff’s of the state, which will enable them to more effectually discharge the duties ol their offices. With a thorough ac cord between the officers of tlie state it is easy to see that the ends of justice will be easily compassed. The sheriffs of Georgia arc very cfficicut.and active already, and any thing that will add to their usefulness, as conservators of the peace, deserves the moral aud active support of all good citizens. It is hoped that all ol the sheriffs of the state will attend the conven tion. Alaska and its Resources. To one whose attention lias never been called to the fact, it seems rather surprising that San Francisco is ou the meridian that divides the pose3 sionsof the United States into equal parts. The Alaskan archipelago ex tends as far to the west of San Finn cisco as Maiuc is east of it. W r e are furthermore not apt to realize that the coast line of Alaska exceeds that of the United States, and-thnt its ter ritory is equal in extent to the por tion of the United States cast of the Mississippi River. Its islands are some 1,100 in number, and its scene ry is as grand and rugged, with its abrupt headlands, its gigantic ravines, its snow covered mountains and gla ciers, and enormous rivers, as any on this continent. It lias a population of about 32,000, only 3,000 of whom arc whites.—Scientific American. Whenever the Clau-na-Gacl, or any other secret society.assumesto itself the right to try and condemn men in this country, it is time they were squelched. There seems little doubt but that the society named is responsible .for the murder of Dr. Cronin, in Chicago. Like a Paul Revere. Johnstown, June 3.—A nameless Paul Revere lies somewhere among the nameless dead. Who he is nmy never be known, but his ride will be famous in local history. Mounted ou a grand, big bay horse, lie came rid ing down the pike which passes through Conemnugh to Johnstown like some angel oi wrath of old shout* ing his portentious warning: “Run for your lives to the bills!” “Run to the bills!” The people crowded out of their houses along the thickly settled street, awe-struck and wondering. Nobody knew the man, aud some thought be was a maniac, and laughed. On at a quick pace be rode, and shrilly rang out his awful cry. In a few moments, however, their came a cloud ot ruin down the broad streets, down the nar row alleys, grinding, tw isting, hurling, overturning, crashing, annihilating the weak and the strong. It was the charge of the flood wearing its coronet of ruin and devastation which grew at every instant of its progress. Forty feet high, some say; thirty, according to others, was this sea, and it traveled with a swiftness like that which lay hidden in the heels of Mercury. On and on raced the rider, aud on and on rushed the wave. Dozeus of people took heed ot the warning and ran up to the hills. Poor, faithful jidcr; it was an unequal contest. Just as he turned across the railroad bridge the mighty wave fell upon him, aud horse, rider and bridge all went out into chaos together. A few feet far ther on, several cars from the Penn sylvania railroad train from Pittsburg were caught up and carried into the cauldron. In New Jersey an old statute has >en discovered, still unrepealed, bich provides “that all women of hntever agt, profession or rank, hether maids or widows, who shah [ter this act, impose upon, seduce, r betray into matrimony any dUe of is Majesty’s subjects, by virtue of sents, cosmetics, washes, paints, art! :ial teeth, false hair, or high heeled ioes, shall incur the penalty uow in tree against witchcraft and like mir smeanors.” If this statute were enforced now courts would he full of cases the fair daughters of Mother WANTED, 500 Gars Watermelons, 5000 Baskets of Early Fruits “WHIT MEDICINES ARE MOST CALLED FOR 7 » asked the roportcr of an old druggist. “Dr. Pierce’s preparations,” lie replied. Tho de mand for it is constant, and I am conversant with scores of cases cured by it.” Returning after a few moments* absence, the venerable wieldcr of the pestle remarked, **fho nnmhor nf R.'irsnrtn rilLia nn,l nfhnr the number of sarsaparillas and other, so- called, ‘blood medicines’ is legion; but Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery outsells thorn all and it is the only blood-purifier out of the many which I am obliged to keep upon my shelves, that is guaranteed to benefit or euro in all cases for which it is recommended, or money naid for it is refunded.” '* In tho fine of Pills,” remarked tho old gen tlemen, “the littlo Sugur-coated ‘Pellets’ put up by Dr. Pierce lead all others, both in amount of sales nnd the general satisfaction they give my customers.” Copyright, 1888, by World’s Dis.
