A Moss Covered Chestnut. How, dear to my hrarl is the K-hool ! tended, And how 1 remember, so distant and dim. That r-m-hemJed Bill and the pin that I And carefully put on the bench under * him. ^ And how 1 mall the surprise bf the master. When Bill gave a yell and sprang oft' from the pin, Ho high that his bullet-head bursted the plaster Above, and the scholars all set up a din. That active boy Billy, that high-leaping Billy, Thai loud-shouting Billy that sat on a pin. WHEN GEORGE III WAS KING. A Liltlo Business Transaction of the Future Father of His Country. From the Boston Budget. Just now, when all good people, are making comparisons between the pres ent nml the “good old times,” and and when they are disposed to think that the comparison is rather badly ngainst us who are living, it is well enough to remember that our great and good Washington wrote some let ters that his successor in these degen erate days never has and never would have written. As, for instance, this:J Mount Verson, 2 July, 17(10. To Captain Joh. Thompson: .Sir: With this letter comes a ne gro (Tom), which I beg the favor of you to sell in any of the islands you may go to, for whatever lie will fetch, ana bring me in return lor him: One hud of best molasses. One ditto of best rum. One barrel of lymes, if good and cheap. One pot of tamarinds, containing about ten pounds. | IT wo small ditto of mixed sweet meats, about five pounds each. And the residue, much or little, in good old spirits. That this fellow is both a rogue nml a runaway (though he was by no means remarkable for the former, and never practiced the latter until late) I shall not pretend to den}-, but that he is exceedingly healthy, strong and good at the hoe, the whole neighbor hood can testify, ami particularly Mr. Johnson and his son, who have both had him under them as foreman of the gang, which gives me reason to hope he may, with your good man agement, sell well if kept clean and trimmed up a little when offered for sale. . I shall very cheerfully allow you the customary commission on this af fair, and must beg the favor of you (lest he should attempt to cscai>c) to keep him handcuffed until you get to sea, or in the bay, after, which I doubt not you can make him very useful to you. I wish you a ptcnsanl and prosper ous passage, and a 6afc and speedy re turn. George Washington. How times have changed since then! And not for*thc worse, alto gether, eh? Elmira, N. Y., June 17.—John L. Lawos, the phenomenal fat man, died nt his home in this city at three o’clock this afternoon. Mr. Lawes has been enjoying uiiusiml good health, and was to have become an exhibition at the county fair, which opens ib this city next Wednesday. Last Friday he was taken ill of ery sipelas and failed rapidly. Mr. Lawes was undoubtedly the heaviest man iu America, weighing at his death 640 pounds. He was horn in England, and was about 40 years of age. He was a blacksmith and worked at his trade up to three years ago. Previous to that time he had weighed but n little over 200 pounds. He then began to gain rapidly in stature, forcing him to retire from the pursuit of his trade. He gained iu weight at the rate of from five to tcu pounds per week. Everything that medical science suggested was applied to his case, but of no avail. Propor tionately as he grew in stature his ap petite increased. Two and three pounds ot beefsteak was hut a small meal for him, and he ate as often as five orsixtimes aday. His physicians recommended a diet, hut his diet grew insatiatable, until at the time of his death his principal occupation was with the knife and fork. It is *aid that there arc live men who stutter to every one womnu thus afflicted. The explanation is easy: a woman’s power of talking is rarely impaired. No greater calamity could befall her. A Swedish socialist was recently very handsomely downed by the court chaplain. The socialist said that “the Saviour was a communist.” The chaplain was ready for him. “Yes,” he replied, “with this difference: Christ said, ‘What is mine is thine; but you say. ‘What is thine is mine!’ ” That answer would be hard to beat. “Don’t disturb me,” remarked the editorial scissors; “I am right in the middle of ar article.” If you want to give pleasure to a :lty woman do not talk to her of r own beauty, but of the ugliness of : women.
