Atlanta is threatened with several new railroads. Foraker will foam at the mouth, now that he has been renominated for Governor of Ohio. His case may develope into rabies, yet. • William Walter Phelps will carry big, bangs with him to the German court? He’ll make .n bang-up rep resentative abroad. The legislature meets next Wednes day, the 3rd. Many important meas ures will be discussed and disposed of during the summer session. Editor Sheppard, with his nose elevated high in air snifls treason on every breeze blown from the South. Wfll not somebody hold his nose? The South is still solid—for honest, economical, constitutional govern ment Probably some of our hyper critical northern republican contem poraries will object to this attitude of the South. Harrison continues to appoint—and dis-appoint—republican office seek ers. “From the racket I hear”—as the presiding officer of the Tennessee legislature once remarked, the dis appointed" arc in the majority. Whatever the country may think of Rutherford B. Hays, ns the man who occupied the presidential chair four years, without a title to it, every one-will sympathize with |him in the loss of his estimable wife. The legislature will, ns it should, grant a charter to the Marietta and North Georgia road to come into At lanta. Give everybody n*cbancc who wants to build a railroad. Com petition in railroads is a mighty good thing for the people. To morrow is a day of rest. Hust ling humanity will lay aside the wires of business, stop, lor one brief day, in the mad scramble of lift, turn aside from the pursuit of pelf, and direct thought* to higher, holier things. Blessed day of rest. What a boon it is. A Brilliat Oration. The press and public speak in the most flattering terms of the literary address of Henry W. Grady, at ihe University of Virginia. His subject was: “Decentralization.” And he handled it like a statesman. It com pares, most favorably, with the much talked of oration of Mr. Chauuey M. Depew, at the late centennial in New York. Mr. Grady’s address is a rare and valuable contribution to the political and literary world. There is food for thought in it; great truths which will challenge the attention of profound thinkers and statesmen. It embodies, in u high degree, those principles for which southern states men have always contended. And it is gratifying to know that these same principles have many strong advocates at the North. Mr. Grady touches a popular chord, a chord which will vibrate wherever pure constitutional government has a foot hold. The address should lie read by ever young man in the land. They Drill draw inspiration from it, and it wfll better fit them fur the grave du- tk* of citizenship. Bounce Him! Speaking of Corporal Tanner, the News says: It is said the corporal has a scheme for increasing pensions that is far ahead of anything that has yet been suggest ed by rcpub’icans for taking money out of the treasury. It is lo abolish the board of review connected with the pension bureau, and to substitute for it a board of increase. With a board of ibis sort, ihe work of increasing pen sions would be greatly facilitated. In the special dispatches several in stances are given of re-rating of pen sions. by means ot which the benefi ciarics received from $i,ooo to $3,000 each. Two of them were so over-joy ed at their good fortune that they gave banquets to their friends, to which they invited the corporal. At one of them the corporal is reported to have made a speech, in which he said that if his right arm held out, he would make a pretty big reduction in the surplus. Il is not to be woudcied at that the l’res ident is getting alarmed at the corpor al’s proceedings. The people ouiside of the pension ers are deeply interesied in 'he pension bureau They have to furnish the money for pensions. They have been thinking for years that the pension bur den could not possibly be made heav ier. The burden has kept on incrcas ing, however, and it begins to look as if additional revenue would be needed in the near future to meet its demands.
