31 | A Female Blacksmith. Fyoffl the Atlanta Journal. * There is n fcknnic blacksmith Atlanta. Her name is Suckie iJrod- ey, and she works in a little smithy on the Mitchell street road nbout half mile beyond the buildings of the Atlanta university. 'She is a strapping woman, about forty, with a fist on her equal to that of John L. Sullivan. She is block, fat and greasy, nnd her arm is ns strong nnd muscular as that belonging to any man in Atlanta. She was standing in the road among ^a group of colored college girls when I saw her, and the contrast being so great I called out as I drove past: „ - ‘/Hello, Auntie. Are you a school girl, too?” “Lord bless your soul, no, honey, I ’longs to the bfacksmiff shop on de hill." * * * The musical clang, cling, dang of the anvil rung out from the shop as I passed on returning. I reined up my horse and saw Suck ie wielding the heavy sledge hammer with as much case as a child would play with its rattle. "I tole you so, honey,” she called to me, whilo a shower of red sparks pat tered against her npron and fell upon the floor. “De ole man sorter poly ’bout sev en year ago,” she said a moment after ward, as th*e fire wooed and crackled under the breath of the bellows mani pulated by her strong arm, “an’ bein’ as roshuns was gittin’ skase I told him to turn off de helper nn’ I’d do de strikin an’ I bin at it ever since.” H* 'I* The iron by this time was white and glowing with heat, and as Guy Brodie, the blacksmith and the wom an’s husband, picked it up with the tongs she grabbed the hammer, stuck her tongue out, shut one eye, and pounded upon it with all the regu- jjjjj larity and percision of an expert 3 421 smith. The job of work was soon finished, and Suckie wiped ter face on her crocus apron and sat down on the horse block, showing two feet minus stockings, encased in a pair of No. 10 boots with the legs cut off. She wore a calico skirt and a white t, checked with the smoke and fof the shop, while her head was encased in a red bandanna, giving a motherly look to her fat and good natured face. 1 4, I come fum ole Ferginny, boss, long ’fore de war, an’ den me an’ Guy got married, an’ ’bout eight year ago we come to live out here, an’ I dun tole you de ress ’bout wuk- kin’ in de shop.” “And you attend to the cooking? “Yasser, an’ de washin’, too, nr den I wuks in de gyarden.’ 4 “How do you like striking in the shop?” “Well, i>o’ folk gottcr do lots dey doan like.” “Can you shoe a horse ?” "No, sah; an’ you|ain’ gwintcr hear ’l^out me tryin’ it, nur a mule nudder I ainter gwintcr fool roun’ de gable eend er no critter wid four laigs.” “Suppose your husband was to get sick?” “Das jess wat he done lass month, Laid flat on his back for two weeks, An’ ain’t I run de shop, all but shoo in’ de mules? I did dat, sah; sharp enin’ plows, rankin’ staples, fixin’ wagins an’ lots moah. I ain no lra’f handed nigger, boss.” “Supyose your old man don’t do to suit you, you’ll make him walk the chalk line, won’t you?” “Ah, Lord, boss,” and Suckie stretched out her black arm as she spoke; “ho don’t need no lookin’ alter. He walks dat kinder line all de time.” On leaving, Suckie called out to me: “Boss, tell all de folks to come out here an see me handle de sledge ham mer and make de sparks fly.” ■ «». » “You do not sing as much ils you used to, Mr. Tompkins," said a young ‘•WHAT MEDICINES ARE MOST CALLED FOR?” sskri) thn roporter of nn old druggist. “ Dr. Pierce’s preparations,” ho replied. “They arc Bold under a positive guar antee that they will, in every case, give satisfaction, or tho money is promptly re funded. His * Favorite Prescription,' for all those chronic weaknesses, nervous and other derangements peculiar to women, is used with unfailing: success. It cures weak back, bear ing-down sensations, irregularities and weak nesses common to the sex. and being most perfect of tonic medicines builds -- and strengthens the entire system. Tho do- mand for it is constant, anti I am conversant with scores of cases cured by it.” Returning after a few moments’ absence, tho venerable wieldor of the pestle remarked, “the number of sarsnpnrillas and other, so- called, ‘blood medicines’ is legion; but Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery outsells them all nnd it is the only blood-purifier out of the many which I am obliged to keep upon my shelves, that is guaranteed to benefit ot cure in all cases for which it is recommended, or money paid for it is refunded.” “ In the fine of Pills," remarked tho old gen tlemen, “the littio Sugar-coated ‘Pellets 1 put up by Dr. Pierce load all others, both in amount of sales and the general satisfaction they give my customers.” Copyright, 18SS, by World’s Dis.
