'wm ■ ■. ; The Planets in July. Jupiter is the evening star, and, ns usual, during the month after opposi tion, is most favorably situated (or observation. He will rise before sun set to-day, and a glance at the south western sky will reveal his presence as soon as the twilight begins to fade. At the close of the month he has so far advanced on his course toward the sun that he is on the meridian soon after 9 o’clock. He is very brilliant in spite of the great southern declina tion. Jupiter sets on the 1st at 1 a. m. On the 31st he sets at 1:17 a. m. His diameter on the first is 4-1.9, and he is in the constellation Sagittarius. Venus is the morning star, and reaches her greatest western elonga tion, or greater distance west of the sun, on the 10th. at 4 a. m. being then 45° 44' west of the sun. After elongation she retraces her steps to ward the sun, her brilliancy slowly decreasing as she recedes from the earth. She will be a charming ob ject in thj morning sky throughout the midsummer month, especially on the morning of the 23d, when ap proaching conjunction with the wan ing moou. Venus rises on the 1st at 1:50 n. m. On the 31st she rises at 1:37 a. m. Her diameter on the 1st is 26” .4; and she is in the constella tion Taurus. Mercury is morning star. He reaches his greatest western elongation on the 12th, at 5 a. m., and then, like his more biilliant neighbor Venus begins to retrace his steps toward the sun. At elongation he is 20° 47' west of the san, and favorably situat ed for observation with the unaided eye, on account of his high northern declination. Mercury rises on the 1st at 3:39 a. m. On the 31st he rises at 4:17 a. m. His diameter on the 1st i6 10' 0, and he is in the con stellation Taurus. Saturn is the evening star. He is so near the sun as he approaches con junction that he will soon he hidden in the sunlight, setting less than an hour after the sun on the last day of the month. . He is visible in the ear ly part of the month in the north west, moving eastward and slowly approaching Regulus.' Saturn sets on the 1st at 9:41 p. m. On the 31st he sets at 7:52. His diameter on the 1st is 15'.m, and he is in the constella tion Leo. Mars is morning star, and makes seemingly little progress in his ap proach toward our planet. He rises on the 1st at 4:11 a. m. On the 31st he rises at 3:47 a. m. His diameter on the 1st is 40'.0, and he is in the constellation Gemini. Uranus is evening star. He is in quadrature with the sun on July 9 nt 8 p. m. He is in good position for telescopic observation, and may lie easily found on nccount of his near approach to Spica. Uranus sets on the 1st at midnight. On the 31st lie sets at 10:03 p. m. His diameter on the 1st is 3'.6, and he is the constella tion Virgo. Neptune is morning star. He rises on the 1st at 2:11 a. m. On the 31st lie rises at 0 h. 15' a. m. His diameter on the 1st is 2'.5, and lie is in constellatian Tarus, Mercury, Mars, Venus and Nep tune are morning stars at the close of the month. Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn arc evening stars.—News. Here is a timely bit of advice: Do nob forget to give baby (no matter how young) a drink of water now and then. Some mothers never think of doiDg this, and all the time the poor little thing is actually suffering for tho want oi water. Just a few drops in a spoon will do at first; nothing will satisfy a child until it gets it. Some years ago I heard of a case where the child was sick. The mother sent for the doctor. He came, and after exam ining it carefully said: “The child is dying for the lack of water. Bring me some and I’ll show you.” The result proved that he was right. All the mother 6aid was: ‘T didu’t know ba bies needed water.” v W AMU xoton , June 28,—Chai rman Buck went to the postoflicc depart incut to-day to recommended Brimberry for postmaster at Albany, Ga., when a change is to be made.
