A Little Boy’s Happiness. A In. W. Beider in Atlanta (Ga.) Journal. I saw a little boy who had finished his fit's* week battling with the world, going home on the street car Satur day night. He was tired out, an I in his arms he lugged a large, dark-green water melon purchased for the home folks with'a portion of his scanty salary. He looked lonesome, and felt a little lonesome, too, but he was proud to think that he was making money like a grown up man. “A feller gets mighty tired of work ing,’' I heard him say to a motherly- looking old colored aunty, "for, you sec, they won’t let him sit down, and I tell you it’s hard.” “I wish you’d ring that bell for me,’’ lie continued, as lie tussled with the slippery melon, “I hate to stop the car, it looks so much like a woman, but this watermelon’s so heavy I’m afraid I’ll fall down if I don't stop it. I bought it with my own money.” The car stopped and hs shuffled off dewn the street hugging the melon to his breast, happy in the thought of having purchased it for the pleasure of others with his own money. So the world goes. We work and toil and strive, but how little of our earnings we keep lor ourselves. But after all, this is the only true secret of happiness, giving pleasure to others and the only miserable man is he who lives for self alone. Said an old railway engineer tlic- otherday: “There arc three kinds of trains that I do not want to have anything to do with. One is the pay train. You never know when you will overtake the section hands. You will be going at the rate of forty miles ain hour, away you go around a curve and you will dash by the boss and hands and have to back back to them. There is always a good deal of talk over the wages and much time is taken up. The next unpleasant train to handle is an excursion train. Every one living along the line of road knows you by seeing you come by every day and they think you know them as well. When on an excursion they presume upon their •riendship to endeavor to ride on the engine. No other place will do them. The engineer has to refuse them, as it would amout to docking his wages from thirty to sixty days, if lie com plied, as it is positively against the rules of the road. The persons de nied the privilege always feel hard about it, and look upon the engineer as unaccommodating. The last and worst of all, however, is the officer’s train. If you run slow they say you are scared and fear to run fast. If you make good time they say you are careless and reckless, and want to kill somebody. You can’t suit them.” Those Disobliging Men at the Windows. From the Detroit Free Pre«s. “This letter is to my husband,” she said as she licked on a stamp at the window in the corridor ol the post office. “Yes’m.” “Will it go out to-day?” “Yes’m.” “By the first mail ?” “Yes’m.” “He ought to get it day after to morrow ?” “Yes’m.” “And I ought to have a letter by Saturday?” “Yes’m.” “It isn’t over weight?” “No’rn." “And if he gets it, and if 1 get bis answer by Saturday, I can write ” “Please don’t obstruct the window, roa’ojn; there’s forty people waiting.” “Oh! there arc! That’s always the •way of it. I caunot get a wotd of information out of this jwstoffice, tty as I will. Good day, sir! I'll go across to Canada after this!” WOMEN ANO MICE. The renson why a woman is afraid of ft mouse is ft profound myetery—indoed, it hns never been very closely proven that'she is. Hut some women are constantly in such a nervous, irritable condition that the slightest thing annoys and startles them. The cause of this unfortunate state of affairs is usually some functional derangement: some distress ing or painful irregularity, some derange ment or peculiar weakness incident to her sex; or, it may be due to intlammation, ul ceration or displacement, of some of tho pelvic viscera, or to other organic lesions peculiar to her sex. From whichever cause ft may arise, Dr. Tierce s Favorite Prescrip tion is a positive rnnetty, so certain in its curative results that its manufacturers sell it, through druggists, under a yuaranttx of its giving satisfaction in every case, or money paid for it will Ik* promptly re funded. As a soothing and strengthening nervine, “Favorite Prescription” is une- a ualed and is invaluable in allaying and sub- uing nervous excitability, irritability, ex haustion, prostration, hysteria, spasms and other distressing, nervous symptoms com monly attendant upon functional and organic disease of the womb. It induces refreshing Bleep and relieves mental anxiety and de spondency. Copyright, 1SS?, hy Y.'ORl.D’S DlS. MED. ASS’X. DR.
