This Year’s Elections.
From the Albany Ar*os.
The current year is notably an “oil'
ytair” in general politics. Only elev
en states elect state officers this year.
Kentucky will hold a general election
for state treasurer on Aug. 5. Elec
tions in Uh other states will take
place on Nov. 5. On that day:
Iowa will elect governor and lieu
tenant governor.
Maryland will elect comptroller
and attorney general.
Massachusetts will elect a governor
and state officers.
Mississippi will elect governor and
state officers.
Nebraska will elect a supreme
court judge and two' regents.
New Jersey will elect governor and
state officers.
New York will elect state officers
except governor and lieutenant gov
ernor.
Ohio will elect governor and state
officers.
Pennsylvania will elect state treas
urer.
Virginia will elect governor and
state officers.
Political interest this year, accord
ingly, is centered in the elections of
the newly admitted states, North
Dakota, South Dakato, Washington
and Montana, which are now fram
ing their constitutions and will elect
full state governments and legisla
tures which will choose eight new
United States senators. Each new-
state will also elect a representative
in congress, except jiouth Dakota,
which will elect two.
The terms of no United States sen
ators expire next year, so the election
of members of the legislature this
year is of interest as hearing on na
tional politics only in cases where
members of the legislature chosen
this year hold office for two years.
The Senate elected in New A ork
state will vote for a United States
senator in 1891 to succeed lion. Will
iam M. Inverts.
Gilliflovver isn’t much of a scholar,
and the other night he was reading to
his old-fashioned wife, out of a news
paper, he came across an item about
some woman having charge of twenty-
five kindergartens. The last n being
a little- hluircd he read “twenty-five
kind er gatters.”
“Law sakes!” exclaimed the old
lady, as she snatched off her spectacles
in astonishment, “twenty-five kind cr
garters! No wonder there’s so many
busted people and repytashens nowa
days. Why, when I was a gal wc used
to knit ’em or use a string, and if wc
wanted something right handsome
we’d get the sclvidgc off the cloth
when the boys got a pair of trousers
made out o’ store cloth. Now every
body must have 'lastics. Twenty-five
kind 'o garters! An’, of course, other
things to match! This is what Sarah
Togy and Nary Gansett l’ccr’s doin’
for us.”
Then she replaced her specs and
went on knitting.
Atlanta,Ga., July 22.—The hill of
Representative S. Nelson, of Merri
wether, to reduce the lees for inspect
ing guano to tetf cents per ton, was
killed by the House committee on
agriculture this afternoon.
The advocates of the hill tried to
save it with an amendment placing the
reduction at twenty cents per ton, but
it was defeated.
Several alliance members were in
strucled by other organizations to
support the bi’l. The fate of the hill
virtually insures the passage of Mr.
Calvin’s bill to create farmers’institutes
with the funds arising from the Ruano
inspection. The agricultural commit
tee has sixty members, and it is under
stood to be favorable to Mr. Calvin’s
measures.
