His Conduct Was Considered Onery Mean.- From th» K*w York Sun. There was to be a hanging in a South Carolina town, and die people had come from far and near 10 witness itr An hour belore the time set for the execution the crowd numbered fully t,500. Half an hour later word was given out that the condemned had been reprieved, and that there would be no hanging. A very few expressed their satisfaction that the governor had interfered, but the majority were greatly disappointed One man, after considerable loud talk, pushed his way through the crowd to the jail and called 10 the sheriff, who stood on the steps: “You,.thar\ Jim Reeves .’” “What is it "Hain’t Jim Renfoe gwine to be hung?’ I “No.” “Is that squar ?” “Yes.” “Did Jim hev anything to do with it?” ‘.‘Well, he didn’t want to be lutng. and he encouraged his lawyers to do their best.” “He knowed that’ was a big crowd ycre?” "Yes.” "He knowed what we come fur?” "Yes.” “Look ycre, Jim : I've driv fo’teen miles to sec this ycre, and I've got the ole woman and the three children yere, and my five niggers hev gat a holiday, and who's gwine ter pay the damages ?” “Thar’ ain’t no damages.” “Thar’ hain’t. ch ! Don’t you twitter that thar’ hain’t ! Somebody has gut to make up to me fur this. I’ll sue the whole parcel ol ye, from governor down, and if I can’t git satisfaction then Jim Renfoe had better look out fur me! A man as will go and pizen his grandmother and git all ready to be hung and then kick agin it and leave a big crow’d in the lurch is too onery fur this section, and I’m gwine to camp on his trail! Tell Jim he’d better grow wings afore he comes out O’ that, and they want to be wings big enough to carry him off at the rate of a mile a ifiinute.” In “Ye” Olden Time. Louisville News and Farmer: In 1795 a constitutional convention met in Louisville. The session lasted three weeks, and by this convention it was provided that Louisville should be the scat of government. The first legislature met here in 1795 and elect ed Jared Irwin governor. The other governors serving at Louisville were James Jackson, Josiah Tatnall, Jr. John Millcdge; Mtlledge and Irwin each serving two terms. Not till 1825 was a governor elected by the people Governor Troup served his second term, being the first elected by a pop ular vote. The first legislative as sembly met in Savannah in 1775. Soon after Governor Reynolds, at a beautiful situation on the Ogeechee river, about 12 miles from Savannah, laid off a town which he called Hard- wteke. Here he was in favor of locat ing the Capitol of Georgia. The cap- itol, however, was removed from Sa vannah to Augusta. During the revo lutionary war, to avoid the British, Heard’s Fort, now Washington, Wilkes county, was made the temporary seat of the government. The war over, it was moved back to Augusta; thence to Louisville, Milledgevtlle and Atlan ta. Louisville was not, as some say, the first capitol ol Georgia as a state. Georgia entered into the compact as one of the “Original Thirteen” in 1879; Washington was qualified as President April 30th of this year. Louisville became the capitol seven years later. I have been reliably in formed that the armory stood on the ground now occupied by the stores of Messrs. Gamble and A. N. Reach & Bro. The I-ouisville Academy was incorporated February 22, 1796. The first board of trustees were Rev. David Bothwell, John Shellman, James Merriwether, John Cobbs and Josiah Sterrett. Only five academies had at that time been incorporated in the |tate; Savannah, Augusta, Suobury and one each in Rurkc and Wilkes counties. “The next thing to success,” once wrote Disraeli, "is to make a great noise in the world.” Rut it isn’t every man who blow s a base drum who "gets there” The noiseless fellows IMPORTANT II CUM PI Consoiitialh your Shipments to Houses wlio have Standing and Ability. wl a change: Fix months’ c< i him.
