“Doctor, I shall just toko a penny

The speaker was a prominent citi

reporter as to why lie wanted it. #
“Well, you sec," said he, in answer
to a question, “I am a little supersti

in carrying a penny in my pocket.
“It gives me good luck,’' said the
Doctor, with a smile.
The reporter professed his ignorance
of how the luck came, but acknowl

superstitious.
“You may not think ii, but 1 bare
carried one penny in my pocket mi
over twenty years, and I just lost it
yesterday, and 1 came at once to get
another one. I have always had
good luck, and carry my penny
ways in my pocket.
A few gentlemen were standing
near by, listening to the conversation.
One came up, and reaching into his
vest pocket, pulled out a rabbit's foot.
“That’s my luck," said lie, “and I
estfry it all the time. That is the
St hind foot o 1 a grave-yard rabbit,
killed in Oconee cemetery, and I have
great faith in it. It may be supersti
tious, but 1 carry it all the same.'
The reporter's hair began to stand
on end. Surely he was in the witch s
land and everything was enchanted.
But another stepped up, and added his
story:
“Here is a buck-eye,” said be,
“which 1 have carried for many
years, and money couldn’t buy it-
I have learned to rely upon its faith
fulness, and I can t give it up.
“Well,” said the reporter, in a half
melancholy tone, “I reckon I’d betti
get some luck, too;” and forthwith lie
went off in a trot to look for pennies
buck-eyes and rabbit s feet. Atlieii
