ASLEEP ON THE TRACK.
A little child, tired of play, had pillowed his
head on a railroad track and fallen asleep.
The train was almost upon him when a passing
stranger rushed forward and saved him from a
horrible death. Perlmns you are asleep on tho
track, too. You ure, if you are neglecting tho
hacking cough, the hectic llush, the loss of
appetite, growing weakness and lassitude,
which have unconsciously crept upon* you.
Wake up, or the train will be upon you I
Consumption, which thus insiduously fastens
its hold upon its victims while they are un
conscious of its approach, must be taken in
time, if it is to be overcome. Dr. Pierce’s
Golden Medical Discovery has cured thou
sands of cases of this most futnl of maladies.
If taken in time, and given a fair triaj. it Is
guaranteed to benefit; or cure in every ease
of Consumption, or money paid for it will be
& Spitting of mood. Short-
ness of Breath, Bronchitis, Asthma, Severe
Coughs, and kindred affections, It is an effi
cient remedy.

REWARD
Genius Allied to Melancholy.
From the Courier-Journnl.
The jokes of Abraham Liucoln, not
less than his bight, his angularity, his
patience, peristeuce aud. self restraint
are a part of the personalty he im
pressed upon his own generation and
the one to follow. With the humor
ous trait in his nature well developed
we can scarcely think of him other
than as one who took the optimistic
view of life aud humanity, and pre
served through the utmost danger and
the sharpest doubts an abiding faitli
in the future. But the recent reve
lations of associates and biographers
have shattered all such popular ideas
of the Great Emancipations. We
now know that his mind in manhood
was prone to melancholy ; his dry
humor was the cloak for his true
thoughts and feelings, an emanation
of the surface only. Behind the jest,
care, doubt and despair fought
against courage, resolution and per
severance.
Perhaps we may safely say that the
mind of every great man is shadowed
by melancholy. Greatness is not an
easy triumph ; toil, suffering and fear
darken the path which leads to fame ;
the final victory scarce compensates for
that which was endured in achieving
it; the recollection of early trial sad
dens and softens later success ; often
the most ardent spirit would hesitate
and turn back were it not for the con
sumiug desire to excel which impels
the toiler onward and never permits
his weary brain to more tbau briefly
flag in its task. Melancholy is not
pessimism. The pessimists arc those
who havc'never striven and succeeded.
A touch of sadness tinges the minds
of the greatest, the wisest and the
best.
Truly great men are Tare. Extra
ordinary combinations of circum
stances alone produces them; there
must be a meeting of the man and
the. event; both the mind and the
occasion must be ready, aud when the
time comes, the great soul, taught
patience, courage and sagacity, leaps
to its opportunity and the flood of
enthusiasm and ardor overwhelms all
obstacles; without the severe discip
line of waiting it could not have suc
ceeded, but in the hour of triumph
the melancholy of past failure caunot
wholly. d : sanpear.
Perhaps it is best that great men
should be subject to melancholy.
The recollection of their owu disap
pointments gives them more sympa
thy for human suffering, and they can
judge, with tenderness, our follies and! _ _ _
qur frailties. A few lofty and far- j IQ*j?L*X*TTCxJrLo
seeing intellects lead, though their
influence may for the time he unfelt,
and when they teach wisdom and
mercy the lesson will not be lost.

Character the Key to Success.
Two fundamental psychological
elements to he always studied among
any people arc character and intelli
gence. Character is infinitely more
important to the success of au indi
vidual or a race than intelligence.
Rome, in her decline, certainly pos
sessed more superior minds than the
Rome of the earlier ages ot the re
public. Brilliant artists, eloquent
rhetoricians, aud graceful writers ap
peared then by the hundred. But
she was lacking in men of manly and
energetic character, who may perhaps
have been careless of the refinements
of art, but were very careful of the
power of the city whose grandeur they
had founded. When it had lost all
of these, Rome had to give way to
people much less intelligent hut more
energetic. The conquest of thejm-
cient, refined and lettered Gneco-
Latin world by tribes of semi-barbar
ous Arabs constitutes auother exam
ple of the tame kind. History is full
of Buch.—G. Lc Bon in Popular Sci
ence Monthly.
