ASPECTS OF THE MOON.
An Alleged Change in One of its Great
Craters.
The members of the Baltimore So
ciety of Amateur Astronomers have
received a dispatch from Prof. Ivit-
chic, at the Harvard observatory, an
nouncing a change in the crater Pliny
of the moon. This remnant of a vol
cano is one of the many crags and
peaks distinguishable through an
opera glass, field glass, or telescope.
The entire surface of the moon is
broken up by walled plains, in the
center of each of which rises a straight
mound. Crater Pliny is one of the
best known of these, and is in the
northwestern quadrant of the huion.
A Baltimore astronomer says that lie
thought a mistake had been made in
regard to the discovery, as the satel
lite is believed to he dead, amnio
change can take place on its surface.
He said that it is possible that the
professor, who thought he had made
a discovery, had been misled by the
different prominences on the surface
being illuminated at different angles
and thus presenting a different appear
ance.
By the most powerful telescopes
the moon can be brought within lob
to 200 miles of the earth, and “every
thing,” said the astronomer, “appears
dead. Nothing but the wildest deso
lation prevails. Circular caverns and
pits have their lloors strewn with
httgo blocks, and sides stretching up
ward 1,000 feet, Some of the moun
tains enclose areas of 30 to 120 miles
in diameter, while the peaks them-
"selves rise often to 7,000 feet, and ia
one instance 10,000 feet in altitude.
Love in Nebraska.
It was at Spirit Lake, at the very
limit of the pier. They were all
alone. There was no moon, but the
stars were big and bright, and so full
of self-conceit that they looked at
themselves in the water and winked.
Far out a boat slid noiselessly along.
In a nearer boat a fair tenor voice
carelessly half hummed, half sang a
common-love song. From the Or
leans Hotel came now and then the
twang of the strings of the orchestra
of mandolins. On such a night as
this did Dido stand upon the wild
sea bank and wave her love to come
again to Carthage. On such a night
ns this did Jessica—but a truce to the
bard 1 It was the sort of night on
which a man could make love to his
own wife! and those two, Kdouard
and Alicia, had not yet bespoken
their tender vows.
“Do you know anything about the
stars?” inquired Edouard, in a voice
like the murmur of the wind in sum
mer trees.
“A little,” answered Alicia, tender
ly, “I know some of the constellations
—the Great Bear—the—”
“Yes,” interrupted Edouard, “I
know all about the lug hear and can
find the North Ktar ; but right over
there is a group. Do you know the
name of that?” And Edouard threw
his arm across Alicia’s shoulder and
pointed to a cluster of shining worlds
in the east.
Alicia leaned toward him. “I
don’t know what that is,’’she breathed
as one who did not care.
“And there is another constellation
just over our heads!” Edouard pass
ed his arm around her neck, and
placing his hand under her chin so
. tilted it that it would he easy for her
to see. Aud then to Alicia’s eyes the
heavens became one grand carnival of
constellations. Shooting stars chased
each other athwart the firmament,
comets played riotous games among
the planets, and finally there came a
soft and radiant blur which hid them
all.
Edouard had kissed Alicia.—Oma
ha Republican.

“WHAT MEDICINES ARE IHOST
CALLED FOR?”
OBkod the reporter of an old druggist.
“ Dr. Pierce's preparations,” ho replied.
“They ate sold under a positive guar
antee that they will, in every case, give
satisfaction, or the money is promptly re
funded. His ‘Favorite Prescription,' for all
those chronic weaknesses, nervous and other
derangements peculiar to women, is used with
unfailing success. It cures weak back, {tear
ing-down sensations, irregularities and weak
nesses common to the sex, and teeing the
most perfect of tonic medicines builds up
and strengthens the entire system. The de
mand for it is constant, and i nm conversant
with scores of eases cured by it.”
Returning after n few moments’ absence,
the vene rable v. ieid?r of the pestle remarked,
“the number of sarsaparilla* and other, so-
called, ‘blood medicines' is legion; but I)r.
Pierce’s Holden Medical Discovery outsells
them ail and it is the only blond-purifier out
of the many which I am obliged to keep upon
my shelves, that is guaranteed to benefit or
cure in all eases for which if. is recommended,
or money paid for if is refunded.”
“In the line of Pills,” remarked the old gen
tlemen, “the little Sugar-coated ‘Pellets’
put up by i>r. Pierre lead all others, both in
amount of sales and tin* general satisfaction
they give my customers.”
