The Jew in Politics. The Hebrew Observer expresses some views on (he question, whether Jews, as Jews, should affiliate with any political organisation. We think we may say with pride that such a thing as a “Jewish vote” has never presented itseli in our government Outside of the synagogue we are citi. sens of the United States. Tile Jew has always been remarka ble for his loyalty, because he so com pletdy adapts himseli to the country in which he lives. Where are found heartier Englishmen than the English Jews! Where more patriotic Germans than among the German Jews? The votes we cast have nothing to do with the religious creed of the candidate; that is a private matter. The Cause) of Yawning. Yawning is commonly caused by temporary deficiency of the air supply in the lung. When the body is wear ied and in a sleepy condition the pro' cess of respiration is sometimes invol untarily suspended for a few seconds. Nature at once comes to the rescue, and by setting up a spasmodic action in the muscles of the mouth, throat and chest produces a deep inspiration, which compensates for the stoppage of^the breathing and is known as a yawn. There is, however, another cause which produces what may be called the yawn sympathetic—an in voluntary tendency to imitation.— Brooklyn Eagle. Mrs. Chitchat (caller)—“Why, my dear Mrs. Slarvem, what is the mat ter? You look distressed.” Mrs. Starvem (boarding-house landlady)—“Oh, the awfulest thing has happened 1 You remember Mr, Giggs, who used to board here at $9 a week, and was such a comfort to me?” Mrs. C:—“Yes. You said he had scarcely any teeth left, and could barely eat a thing. Didn’t cost any more to keep than a kitten.” Mrs. S.—That’s the one. Oh, he’s avillian! Became back yesterday and I let him, have board at only $8 a week, and now I find he’s got a new set of false teeth, and eats like a horse.” “And I’ll take a dozen cars of green corn,” he said, as he wound up his order to the grocer. “Gracious me! but you don’t expect green corn the last of October, do you ?” “No, sir, but we’ll get it next July, won’t we?” “Yes.” “Then make the order for next July. I’m very absent-minded and am continually forgetting some thing. I’ve tried to think of green corn all summer, but forgot it day by day, and now I’ll order in time.”— Detroit Free Press. “AGE CAHNOT ‘WITHER HEB,» remarked an old -gentleman, as ho gazed fondly upon the comely little woman by his ■Ido; “but frankly," ho continued, "at ono time I was afraid cosmetics would.
