B. BURR, ItllNlnoan filnllngrr, Mr. Carlisle defines the Lodge Fed eral election bill as a proposition employ 1,000,000 officials and spend §10,000,000 every two years to obtain a permanent republican majority in the house ot representatives. Contrary to expectation the Grand Jury of Floyd county has found a true bill against Dr. J. B. S. Holmes for killing his brother-in-law Dr. Forrest 'Allgood some months ago. Bail was fixed at $3,000, and was promptly given. The program of the summer session of the Piedmont Chautauqua at Salt Springs is being arranged. This Chautauqua was one of Mr. Grady’s pets, and the shadow of his departed spirit will hover over it for many years to come. The Kansas farmers are not over flowing just now with love lor Ingalls. Perhaps the fiery senator will one day find out that while gall and venomado very well to round a pariizan para graph, they are not particularly seme able in making friends. Farmer Tillman, of South Carolina and he is a bona fide and successful tiller of the soil, will lead his brother farmers in a fight against the ancient Democratic regime in his native state Mr. Tillman will make a thorough canvass ot the state, and as he is a splendid talker he w.ll niake the cam paign a lively one. The New York World’s e.qm.-c of Georgia convict camps is stirring the lessees to a wonderful degree. The expor dealt principally with the Chat tahoochee Brick company, and the gentlemen composing the company deny the allegations with a fervor that reminds one of the ancient adag “Thou dost potest too much.’’ The spring fights have broken ou among the students ot the State Uni versity at Athens. A member of the Junior class was charged with cheating in his examination paper, and was tried before two of the faculty. The fights have grown out of the trial. The young men very sensibly used the weapons nature gave them instead of the modern pistol and ready knile. The southern manulac.uring boom evidently has not reached its climax, judging from the Tradesman’s report for the first three months of 1890. The new industries established in the southern states during this period number 833, against C91 for the same peried in 1889. The cotton and woolen mills established during the first quarter of 1890 numbered 64, against 35 during the first quarter ol the preceding year. long enough prices to insure them selves against loss in cons, quence ot the tv 1 aihtr’s freaks, lor which, of course, 1 hey were no! responsible, lhc pice to large consumers will siar; at 815 per Ion, and will probably advance. This ill wind blows good to the ice manufacturers. “North and south, politically, have no existence,” says the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph, “and it is too long after the war to revive war meas ures and policies for the government of the South. W ith equal reason or justice the leaders of the majority might put squadrous in the Held or set an army of occupation in control of the South. The protest against sectional, partisan legislation should come from the North, not from the South.” It is useless to hope that all will be that ought to be, but there are many republican newspapers in the North that arc raising the voice of protest against the recent display of sectional malevolence in congress. 'I want to tell you,” said a New England tourists “that some of your social and political conditions do not suit the northern people, and when they come here to live, they will try to change them.” “All tight,” said an Atlanta man, ‘come here and live two years, and we will talk about it.” The New Englander looked thought ful. I must admit,” he said, “that I have been surprised and pained to find 1 hat the northern residents here are the very people who most strongly advocate the reprehensive condition of things which I find so objection able.” “Just so.” replied the Atlantian. Strange, isn’t it ? Come down here and scll’c. We don’t care what your present views are. In verity, The Constitution’s staff is known Ly name all over Georgia. It has no lordly “boss” who takes unto himself praise for all the fine and bright work on the paper. In this respect The Constitution is a scathing rebuke to some lesser papers, whose chiefs loom into prominence by capiured light and whose pigmy abilities arc "ac- corded commendations and congratu lations solely due Limburger Cheese as an Incentive to Active Sanitation. A story too good to be lost was picked up by a Morning News repor ter. Alderman Cann, at a recent meeting of council,[introduced a reso lution looking to the improving ot the sanitary condition of the Bilbo canal by the construction of a closed sewer along its banks for the reception ol the house drainage of the city. A wag, said to he a relative ol Alderman Falligant, took it into his head to help Alderman Gann’s efforts by a novel undertaking. Ob taming some tcrrificalty odorous Lint burger cheese, he went to the office of an alderman in the eastern part of die city wlttl.t the clerical force was at dinner, and rubbed pens, pencils, rules, desks, office coals, iic , with the cheese. When the boss and his clerks came in af'er dinner they del, c;ed a penetrating odor permeating every thing. Each one, in turn, as he en tered the office, turned up his note! To each it was suggested that it must be “the Bilbo canal.” F.iial'y the alderman came in and put on his office coat. His olfactory nerves were shocked. “What is dial awful smell ?’’ he asked. “The Bilbo canal !" said one. It is said that the alderman Hurried up town to the mayor’s office and insisted upon an immediate meeting of council on business of great im portance in connection with the Bilbo canal! The mayor, impressed w.tli the ne cessity ol immediate action, called the committee of the whole together the same afternoon. Not a member of the counc i had been let into the secret, and when Alderman Cann’s re olution was brought up for discus sion Alderman Falligant observed that some of his brother alderman were taking decidedly more interest in drainage than he had ever known them to take before, and he availed himselt of the anxiety depicted several countenances and pressed Alderman Cann’s efforts for all they were worth. 'I lie resolution was adopted unanimously. Alderman Falligant insists that lie was totally unconscious of the real cause of the universal interest dis you want any building tloii. wuu I wo will submit owIIuiuU m whether awarded us or not.
