Editor Timks-E.vtehrii 18K: It has been rather unjustly said of our town, that it was impossible to keep up a literary club of any kind, imply ing a lack ol interest or self culture among its residents. It may be interesting to such unbe’ lievers to know that since early in No vember n few ladies, resident here, have met regularly once a week to read aloud in turn, selected nrticles and books. The subjects taken up have been various and popular. The play of Hamlet was first read with a prose ver sion of the same from the “Chautau- quan.” Then the entire volume of Oliver Wendell Holmes “Our Hun dred Days in Europe,” was read with much interest, and iu connection with it articles from “Picturesque Europe.” The readings were further illustrated and interest added by photographs of the many scetise mentioned in the book. Then Shakespeaie/vas resumed; this time the play of Julius Cicsar be- ing considered with nrticles from other sources descriptive ol Ins character, personal appearance, etc. The noxt meeting was especially devoted to articles from the Cosmo politan and other magazines. The last meeting we began a short life of Walter Scott, and a series of pnpers giving in brief the contents oljcneh of the Wnverly novels. An article on the World’s Fair, Irom the North American Review, and one on the Browning’s in Italy, wife also rend. A new feature is to be a monthly re cord of current events. A pleasant fact about the whq^ thing is, that the work has been entire ly voluntary, and one after another joined us simply to refresh the memo ry, and gain useful information Such gatherings arc possible all over the town, and are delightful to form because of the willing spirit shown. can onlv say to others "go and do likewise.” A Mem unit.
