s&f The Columbus Southern. ...
It has been very generally reported
that the Plant system had, by advanc
ing money, obtained control of the
above road. We take the follow ing
from the Enquirer-Sun of the 12th
inst, touching the rumor:
“Captain J. W. English, general
manager of the Chattahoochee Brick
Company .reached the city from Atlanta
last night to be present at the meeting
the directors of the Columbus
Southern road, which takes place to
day.
"Captain English was questioned
reference to the rumor that the Piant
system had secured a controlling inter
est in the Southern by furnishing mon
cy to complete the road to Albany.
"Neither the Plant system or any
other railroad furnished a dollar
the money used in the construction
the Southern,” said Captain English
•“The road has never been offered tor
sale: no proposition for its purchase
has been received or solicited,
have we ever wanted to sell the road
The very emphatic denial will prob
ably put an end to the paragraph
going the rounds of the press in re
gard to the reports sale of the road.”
Speaking of the new schedule, the
same paper says:
“The fast schedule from Albany to
Griffin, over .the Columbus Southern
and Georgia Midland roads, will not
go into effect until Sunday week
The fast train will probably leave Alba
ny at 2 p. m. and arrive at Griffin at
p. m. Close connections from Flori
da points will be made at Albany, and
the fast train will connect at Griffin
for Atlanta and all points north and
east.”
This will open up a new route from
this section to Atlanta. The distance
will be about the same as that by way
of Macon.
While the Cadets are jubilant and
Macon is going wild over her crack
company, the Atlanta Rifles are kick
ing about the decision of the Judges
at the Jacksonville inter-state drill
The latter even charge the Judges
with bribery. This is a serious
charge, and the gentlemen against
whom it is made should refute it, or
more or less odium will attach to their
action in the premises.
A three times millionaire committed
suicide in Chicago the other day
There is probably as much excuse for
a man committing suicide in Chicago
as anywhere else, but it would appear,
at first blush, that a man with three
millions could scuffle along almost
anywhere, even in wicked Chicago
The man should, at least, have waited
until after the World’s fair in that city.
His taking off after that event would
doubtless be. more gratifying—to him
self.
The general conference of the M.
E. Church, South, will convencc in
St. Louis on the 7th of May. It will
be a representative body of that large
and influential religious body. Unlike
the Northern Methodist church, it
never dabbles in politics.
A Memphis man nominates John
H. Inman for president. He will be
known as the original Inman man.
Well, John Inman would make a good
president.
Forty thousand democrats have
been made to walk the plank since
Harrison was inaugurated. And the
rascals have been turned—in. Well,
well, the tide will turn in ’92.
The druggists of Georgia u ill meet

“The Northern Society of Georgia.”
This is the name of a society re
cctitly organized in Atlanta, by cili
zens of the State who formerly lived
North. The following brief summary
of its object will commend the organ
ization to every Georgian and South
erner :
“Primarily the object of the organ
ization shall be the advancement of
the whole south.J
2“Here as northern men have we cast
our lot and here in this society, con
stituted mainly for the purpose of
united act on, do we pledge ourselves
to stand by the south. To accept the
situation as we find it, using all our
endeavors to co-operate with all citi
zens of the south in up-building and
developing her great resources, cuHi
valing at all times for ourselves and
our children that spirit ol fraternity
and harmony with the men of the
south that shall be mighty in its re
sults here, and having its influence in
every section of the land. Lastly
the society will, through its efforts
and discussions, enlightened by the
lops experience in the south of many
ol its members, be able to dissemi
nate true and practical information of
this southern land and spread broad
cast throughout the north, and if need
he around the globe, facts that shall
nducc thousands to come and make
their homes in this fair southland.
* “Loyal to our common country
loyal to the south, our adopted home
an abiding faith in her people,
lunch our “Northern Society,” full of
hope for unbounded usefulness.”
These are not the words and sen
timents of carpet baggers and pro
fcssional politicians. They ring out
clefir and loud, proclaiming that there
are good, fair minded northern men
in Georgia who are here to help de-
velope the resources of the South,
not to malign and slander her people,
It is such men as these who are
wanted at the South. We have
great, big, warm hearted Southern
welcome for al! such, no matter what
section they come from.
