Southern Pine Forests.
Garden and Forest, a well posted ,
j journal,wlio.se specialties are indicated j
MfRlt* name, says that the time ha-|
( qimtc to abandon the idea that the j
supply of hard pine in the South is
practically inexhaustible. The de
maud lor this class ot lumber, ine
vor:d over, lias increased marvelously
ft laic years. Every year slops carry
from Southern ports more and more
pine to Europe, South America and
Australia. Las' year our exports ot
lumber to Great Britain were 50 per
cent, greater than they were the year
before and our exports to South Anr.r
ica increased 45 per cent. All the
saw mills in the South arc now kept
in operation to their full capacity and
many others will be built. This great
demand for Southern pine is natural
Its superior quality, the exhaustion of
other lumber districts, the multiplicity
of railroads and the quicked enterprise
of Southern ports are a sufficient ex
planation of this mighty raid on the
grand forests of the South Atlantic
and the gulf. There is a destruction
of Southern pine, however, which is
less defensible. It is carried on by
the turpentine squatter who rents
thousands ot acres of nob'e pine lands
every year and kills them without get
ting any considerable compensation
Mpr the havoc he has wrought. State
laws for the protection of pine lands
are loudly demanded in South Georgia
and Florida. Nowhere is there any
considerable or intelligent mode
reproduce the forests that are fast wast
ing before the insatiate world’s de
tnands.
The Garden and Forest states the
si’uation briefly thus:
Reproduction is at a standstill,
can only be a matter of time, there'
fore, when the commercial importance
of the pine forests of the South, which
once contained, and perhaps still con
tain, the greatest body of accessible
buPding timber of the vrry highest
class the human race has ever seen,
will be a thing ol the past. No other
ptne lorests produce such valuable
material, and it is not very evident
- where the world is to find a substitute
for Southern hard pine.
This means that the pric.- of r oulh
ern pine lands, especially tho-e favor
ably located as to shipping facilities,
by rail or water, is bound to increase.
This spee'es of property could have
been bought for a song a few yeats
ago, but its owners are beginning to
realize ils value.—Telegraph.

Providence, R. I. April 13.—The
postponed city election yesterday re
suited in a democrat victory, giving
that party a senator and eight repre
sentatives. The complexion of the in
coming legislature shows 57 deino
errts and 50 repubiicans, which gives
the democrats a working majority,
with two to spare, and insures the elec

The Australian ballot system work
ed like clock work yesterday, very
few voters requiriug instruction in
preparing their ballots, while every
body had time enough to vote.

Argument.
A. aud B. (aged 35), have each a
yearly cash balance of 8350.
A. deposits his in life insurance.
B. deposits his in a savings bank.
I. Both die at tho end of tho
first year. A.’s estate receives 810,-
080. B’s estate receives only 8350
plus ono year’s interest.
B. Both live through the 20 years.
The insurance company returns A’s
deposits with compound interest (so
that his 810,000 insurance costs him
nothing); or it gives him a paid up
policy for nearly, if not quite, double
the amount of his first policy; or it
gives him his dividends for the pe
riod in cash, and a paid up for hi
first policy. The bank returns B’s de
posits with compound interest, but
assumes no guarantee of assurance
during the 20 years.
- The company guarantees (after 3
years) an equitable paid up policy lor
alt premiums received, if the insured
is unable to continue his payments.
He is thus entirely protected against
loss of deposits.
. B> however, has the power to draw
his money frpm tho bank whenever
he finds himself in straitened circum
stances, leaving his family unpro
tected aud defeating his original in
tention. * *
Tho proportions hold good for
larger or smaller amounts than 810,-
