Survivors of the War. Commissioner Raum, of the Pen sion Bureau, has prepared, with the aid of the War Department records, an interesting statement of the casual ties of the civil war and of other facts of special value in connection with pension legislation, of which the fol lowing is a condensation : Number of soldiers enlisted during the war for the Union, including rc- enlistments, 2,213,305. Nuraberkilled in battle and by oth er casualties and who died of disease prior to July 1,1865, 364,110. Estimated number of deaths of sol diers discharged duriug the war prior to July 1, 1865,25,284. Number of desertions, 121,890. Number of survivors of the war Ju ly 1, 1865, less deaths and desertions, 1,703,069. Number surviving July 1, 1890, who are probably subject to the ordi nary life tables, 831,089. Number surviving July 1, 1890, who are subject to a greater death rate, 415,000 Number of survivors on the pension rolls, Jan. 1, 1890, 373,102. Number of survivors not on the pension rolls, Jan. 1, 1890,882,987. Number of invalid claims pending Jan. 1,1890, 182,955. Number of invalid claims on re jected files, Jan. 1, 1890, 99,878 Number of widows’ claims pending Jan. 1,1890, 74,223. Number of widows’ claims on re jected files, Jan. 1,1890, 38,660.
