Public Spirit Speaks.
Editor Times-Enterprise :
If anything was made plain in my
first communication, it was that the
town could, and did, use the chain
gang to advantage, and that doing
this they should relieve tho county of
all expense attached to their keeping.
“Boston World” says:
“We assert that the hire of extra
guards and hauling the convicts was
unnecessary expense, and ell done to
make it so costly to take them out
that the fact could be used as capital
to work on, just ns the writer has
done. It was all done for the benefit
of one section.”
Now, what I wrote was purely in
an abstract way, and in a spirit of
justico and impartiality, and not to
discuss the subject in the pnpers with
the Boston World, for I am not, never
have been, aud never will be, iu any
way connected with public life in a
political offioial capacity; but I do
not object to discussing in public, or
private, any publio question with
those who can mako impartial and
impersonal arguments and listen to
the same. From the above remarks
of “Boston World” it is very evident
there need ho no further remarks
from myself. Prejudice and person
ality iu argument and assertion arc
beyond me.

The Elbow Touch.
In (lie world of battle, of politics,
of social life, o( religion, of home life,
there is ever a demand for what has
forcibly been termed “the elbow
touch.” There is no illustration of
human weakness and misery more
complete than that afforded by the
mortal who stands alone in the world,
beyond range on the right and on the
left of the touch of kinship and sym
pathy of soul.—Sparta Ish maelite.
