B. BITI8R, Bnalncsi Jlanatrr, Georgia is fast forging ahead in the race ot progress. There is a general ‘bust up’ of buck' et shops reported, North and South. No great harm will follow. They are not essential, by any means. One of the penitentiary guards at the Dade coal mines killed another guard, this week, over a lady’s ability to make good cake. Very foolish. It is said that the mosquitoes in Florida are very much wrought up about the report that the republicans are going to take hides from the free list. A recent law suit in Dahlonega, originating about a hen and chickens, compelled the defendant’s husband to sell the only cow he possessed in order to get his wife out of it. Valdosta is going to have a cotton compress. As Quitmft is going to put up a compress, Valdosta could not afford t» be left. This reminds us that Thoroasville, for a town of its means, is doing less to control trade than any town in the state. Isthi the right course to pursue? Quitman's Compress. matter for itie past few weeks and is now .ieadyto announce to the world that she will have a first-class cotton compress in operation in ample time to handie next season’s crop. The «& bdjrai.1 tj ui 3iAi j i/aiwo uu siwuii Ever/ dollar of the required capital has b en subscribed, and the papers which make the speedy erection of the plant a certainty were signed to day. Some of Quitman’s most suc cessful business men are at the head of the enterprise, and it is also guar anteed the active assistance of some heavy export buyers. The compress is expected to have 12 000 bales, Quitman’s present receipts, to start with, and that this number will be largely ncreased, both by additional receipts from wagons and also by rail shipments admits of scarcely a doubt. The application for the charter for the compress company will be pub lished in this week’s Quitman Pres3 and the work of erect.ng the plant will soon be commenced. B. D. FUDGE, M. T. Hancock, Trustee etc.. To the defendant, M. T. Hancock, Trustee etc., you are required to be and appear at Thomas Superior Court Southern Judicial Circuit State of Georgia at chambers on the 1st day of July 1890, to show cause if any, why the petition of Plaintiffs in the above stated case should not be granted as prayed for. Witness the Hon. A. If. Hassell, „ Judge of said Court. J. W. Groover, O. S. C. T. C. Ga- THOMASVILLE, GA., DCALEB IN EEEP-:-E00LI HABDWARE Stoves, Iron, —YOTTR ; . "ff GEORGIA—Thomas County. Adams, deceased, late of said county, has applied to me for leave to sell the land belonging to tbe estate of said deceased, and I will puss upon said applica tion at my office on the first Monday in June next. MacIntyre jr., has in due form ap plied to the undersigned for permanent let ters of administration on tiic estate of Mrs. Barbary Thomas, late of said county, deceas ed, and I will pass upon said application on the first Monday in June r.oxt (1890). Jos. S. Merrill, Ordinary. It is now thought that the Macon Construction company and Col. Machen ’have pooled their issues, and both systems will go into Savannah over a common track from Swains- boro. The Macon Construction Co., will build from Swainsboro to Macon, and Col. Machen will build from the same placo to Atlanta. The News says: “The angels will care for me," screamed Henry Geltie as he leaped from the third story of a New York building. Henry was never more mistaken in his life. The angels kept hands off, and Geltie was picked up Irom the pavement dead. The angels seem to be letting people like Geltie very much alone these days. Neither the angels or providence interferes when a crack brained fellow jumps from a three story building. A man, generally speaking, paddles his own canoe. Crisp on Reed. Speaker Itecd’s Pittsburg speech has attracted very general attention Speaking of it, Charley Crisp says: It is a vile slander ou the people of the south. There is no demand for a federal election law by the best people, either north or south. Ccr tain republican politicians have en deavored to create such a demand in the north by misrepresentation and slanderous statements as to the condi tion of affnirs in the south, for the purpose of justifying them in the passage of a law looking ostensibly to the purity of elections, but really intended to secure the appointment of a republican returning board to falsify the real vote and certify the election of republican congressmen from the south, whether they nrein fact elected or not. Mr. Reed is a type of that class of politicians who will not hesi tate at anything to keep the Repub lican party in power. His speech at Pittsburg demonstrates this. “He says the people of the.eolith, justify election frauds and lynching This statement is absolutely untrue and no man who had a proper regard for the truth would say such a thing. Even the scurvy politician who seems to see the things he does not ought to preserve an appearance of decency. “No party necessity can jmtify such slanders and abuse of a people, Southern men as a class will always be found true to every principle of honor. Any one who knows them is aware of this, and such utterances as those attributed to Mr. Reed his Pittsburg speech can only linve the effect of belittling him. They can’t hurt us.” To day the great labor demonstra tion occurs in,Chicago. It is thought that a quarter of a million of sullen, dissatisfied, mutinous mechanics and citizens will take part in the demon stration. Chicago is a hot bed of socialism. Tbe most vicious and dangerous element in America may be found in Chicago. Thousands and thousands of these boldly march be neath the red flag—in that city, And that red flag means murder, ra pine and lawlessness. Dudley and Davis not Confirmed. Washington, April 28.—It begins to look ns though neither of the two negro postmasters nominated by Har rison for Georgia would be confirmed. Both Dudley of Americus and Davis of Athens are hung up in the Senate committee. As neither will be con firmed it is not improbable that Wan- amaker may have them both with drawn. The respectful tone of the Athens petition, with its respectable signatures, impresses him. An Earihauake at Saratoga. Troy, N. Y., April 28.—About 10:30 o’clock last night three slight earthquake shocks were felt at Sarato ga. A QUAKE AT LISIiON. Lisbon, April 28.—A shock ol earthquake occurred in this city to day. GEORGIA—Thomas County. Ordinary's Office, April 28th, 1890. Bessie Manning 1ms applied to me for let ters ot administration on the estate of Wil liam Murphy, deceased, late of s,\id county, to issue to R. B. Mardre, Public Admisistro- tor of said county, and I will pass upon said application at tny office on the first Monday in June next. Jos. S. Merrill, Ordinary. Bad for Prohibition. Washington, April 28.—The Unite! States supreme court, through Chief Justico .Fuller, to day rendered an opinion adverse to the constitu tionality of the state laws providing for the seizure of liquor brought into a state in original packages. Such laws, the court holds, ere au inter- feicnco with interstate commerce. After the liquor becomes the proper ty of the importer, tbe state may, under its police powers, regulate or prohibit the sale, but it has no power in the absence of an express congres sional authority to prohibit the trans portation of an article from another state, and its delivery to tbe importer.
