The citizens of Richmond have tisked Mrs. Davis that the late ex- president, Jefferson Davis lie buried in that city. Sirs. Davie responds as follow*: T'i> the Hon. City Council and Hoard of Alderman of Hirhnnmd: Genti.emex—I have received your resolution and thank you for the handsome dress in which you embod ied them, and most sincerely for the noble tribute you have paid to my husband. These are the more gratify ing because some of your members were our neighbors when we hoped everything and feared nothing, and the reverses and disappointments we sustained drew us closer together. Believe me, the aflection you express for him who served you gladly while be could and 1otc:1 your state aud city sincerely while life lasted, brings such comfort as is now possible to me andmine. I uoteyour resolutions as to the disposition of the revered remains My friends, do not press for an swer now. I cannot decide the ques tion yet, but can only say I will do what seems to our family and friends best when we come to determine the final place of interment. One of my dead rests with you. and most tenderly have you cared for and feuded the little grave, and a grateful memory is ever present with me. Please accept singly and collectively, for yourselves and beloved city you represent, the best wishes and sincere thanks of Yours faithfully, V. Jkkfekso.n Davis. They Have a Test Case. Washington, April 30.—The Star to night says: The democrats now lirve a case they may get into the supreme court to test the constitution ality of the act of the speaker in counting members who do not vote to make a quorum. They refrained from voting on the Dingcly worsted bill and it was passed by 138 affirm ative votes, the speaker counting i quorum. It is the purpose of the im porters to resist the operation of the hill, if it is passed by the senate and receives the president’s signature. By taking a test case to the courts, when an attempt is made to collect the duty on worsteds by the bill, the., can get the question before the su preme court. Charlotte,JN. C., will celebrate the anniversary of the Mecklenburg dec laration of independence on the 20th inst. Wonder if,Sam Jones will take a part in the programme. Mr. Cleve land has been invited, but from the following it will lie seen that he can not attend: 810 Madison Avenue, April 20, 18SM). II. H. Orr, Esq., Secretary: Dear Sir—Your kind invitation to be present at the 115th anniversary of the declaration of independence, made at Charlotte, N. C., is received. 1 am sorry that ray engagements aud plans already made render it imposs ible for me to accept the invitation. Thanking you and members of the committee for thinking of me in con nection with the occasion, 1 am y>urs very truly, (>hover Cleveland. "The executive committee of Gwin nett, pursuant to the chairman's call, lmsordereda primary election on June 21stfor state house officers, governor, state senator, congressmen aud legis lative members.'’ And so old Gwinnett will fire the first gun in the political campaign to he ioughtin this state in 1800. And its echoes will sound from the mountains to the seaboard. Tho World Without a Bible. It. I.. Hostings. Greece legalized piracy and made its captivis slaves. Rome defied em perors and degraded the people. In Athens, when Demosthenes was pro nouncing his orations, you could buy a man for 83!>, half the price of an ordinary horse. Plato was exposed for sale in the slave market. JKsop, whose tables you read and study, was a slave. In Rome, when Christianity dawned upon the earth, a slave was worth about 800. That was the price at Rome, with all her wealth, splendor, palaces, strength and vic tories, put upon a man. You could not buy men at that price now. Something has changed the whole matter. “O,” says one, it is progress, human progress, that has made the change.” Very well. A friend of mine was in the Fiji Islands forty-five years ago. They have had just as much time to pro gress as any one, since they started from the monkeys, as some of our skeptical friends claim to have done. What was a man worth there 1,800 years this side of Rome ? You could buy a man for about SG. Put the best specimens of iufidels obtainable into the Fiji market forty five years ago and they would not have brought 87.50 apiece. But you cannot buy a man now for 87.50, nor for a million dollars. Why not? Twelve hundred Christian chapels will tell why not. They have read that book which says: “Ye are not redeemed with corrupt ible things, as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.” Now I judge that a book which raises the principles of humanity in that way is worth beeping for the good it has done. So yov see “progress” has not raised the value of humanity. They have had 1,800 years to progress in, and from Rome, at 800, have come down in Fiji to 87.50 Now v hat has changed these things n Fiji was not “progress”—it was sal vation It was not improvement, it was not the merely changing of apes into infidels, but the sudden changing of sinners into saints. There are men to day preaching the gospel of Christ who, forty years ago, would sit at cannibal feasts. They have been changed, and all the “progress” of ten million ages would not work such a chang# at that. It is done by the power of G«l. Sam Jones and the Negroes. Charlotte, N. C., May 1.—Fully 8,000 negroes were crowded into the tabernacle here this afternoon to hear Sam Jones. It was a special meeting fo.- negroes. lu a town of 12,000 pop ulation such a sight was never before witnessed. Sam Jones talked to the negroes about stealing, lying, whisky drinking and immorality. As long, he said, as the race sells its vii tue for a spool of tmead, or a ribbon, it can never amount to much. The most striking scene ever wit nessed was at the close of the sermon, when Jones asked all those who were going to quit stealing, lying, whiskv- drinkingand immorality, and here after lead a Christian life, to stand up. The entire tlnong rose in a solid mass. According to a special from Wash ington to the Constitution, Matt quay has made arrangements with the census takers not to count the ne groes in the south. O, Mathew, don’t do this. B. S. FUDGE, tii< > mas villi:, <ja.. —dealer is— HARDWARE Stoves, Iron, F-:-E00L!
