Forrester, a prominent melon grower of Albany, has been in terviewed by the Atlanta Constitution. Said Mr. Forrester: ■I have it officially, that several of the principal southern railroads ate doing all in their power to get an ad vance of about twenty per rent, in the rates upon melons. These roads, you understand, arc roads doing business south of the Ohio river, and the aim is to have the advance held over all that territory. The news of this con templated move readied me first as a rumor from a private source, hut I have since been able to confirm it from an official source. “1 did not come to Atlanta on mel on business, and I deprecate being drawn into a newspaper controversy of any kind; Inti this is a business matter and it is necessary for us to look after our own interest. “You see all the railroads were fully represented at our January meeting in fact, there were as many railroad men there as there melon men. lhc railroad men were invited for the ex press purpose of obtaining from them tli-; exact status of the railroad toward us, so wc could come to some determ ination as to the acreage of this year’s crop. Onr position was just this: with the railroad rales the same as last year, wo could plant as many melons; but an increase in the rate would bring a corresponding decrease in the acreage. “At that meeting, then, the direct question was put to the railroad men, ‘Would the rates on roads south of the Ohio river he the same this year as last ?’ They answered ‘yes.’ So we went ahead, relying on that statement, and planted our acreage accordingly. “Now, within thirty days of the time when the crop will begin to come in, they spring an advance on us. That advance menus about fifteen dol- lart a car, or a total of Sl.iO.OOt) on the 10,000 ears we expet tiiis year. Ev ery cent of that comes from the grow er. The increase is in the face of the tact that the railroads have always gotten about two dollars to our one in every ear of melons that went out of the south. “This incrasc of rates has not been fully determined on as yet, and while some of the principal roads arc urging it, others do not favor such action. Final action will lie taken this week at Louisville.” Court of Ordinary. in the Court ot Ordinary yesterday B. I). Singletary was appointed guar dian of the person and poperty of \S. J. Rawls, minor.
