As the Superior Court of Brooks county is in session they will probably be given a speedy trial. H. WOLFF & BRO. 100Nr, 1 11 Urouti St. THE LEADERS OF STYLES. Death of a Prominent Chatta- noogan. Chattanooga, Tcna., May I.— Hon Patrick Fleming, member of the board of mayor and aldermen of this city, died at JO o’clock to-night of congestion of the lungs, after an illim? of about ten days. He was one of the most universally loved and highly respected citizens of Hamilton county and a loyal Irishman and a member ot the Catholic church. Mr. Fleming was (ptito well known here, having done the plumbing and other work on the Opera house, two years ago. His Thomnsvillc friends will be pained to leant of his death Mr. John W. Masttry and family, who have been wintering at their beautiful country home in “Cleveland park,” will leave for the north on Sat urday. Mr. Masury during his seve ral years sojourn here, lias won the friendship and high esteem of every one. No one has contributed more readily or cheerfully to the prosperity and growth of Tliontasville and vicin ity, and our people appreciate it Every one will be pleased to see him and his family "Away down South in Dixie,” when the leaves begin to turn again. A man stepped into A. F. I’revatt’s store on Jackson street, the other day, and bowed politely to the life size pic turc of Gen. Fitz Lee, standing near the door. He was returning the dashing Confederate General’s saluta tion, as the picture—and it is very life like—represents Lee lilting his hat. AVe understand that the Comity Commissioners will, at an early day, put a palisade fence around the jail lot. The fact that prisoners will be confined on the first floor, would sug gest that no otic he allowed within the enclosure without the knowledge and cousent of the jailer. Capt. It. G. Fleming, superintend ent of the S. F. it \V. Ivy, accompa nied by assistant superintendent Aveilltc, passed through here yester day in Capt. Fleming’s private car, cu routo to Albany; they will return to day. Thomnsvillc should do some syste matic and liberal advertising thissum- mcr. Council Proceedings. May 5, 1800. Council met in regular session, Mayor Hopkins presiding. Aldermen Wright, Hayes, Merrill, Mitchell, Patten and Wise present. Minutes last meeting read and con firmed. Oil motion of Aid. Patten, the ac tion of council in reference to putting water main on Madison strict was re scinded. Motion by Aid. Patten that water main he laid on Jefferson street in stead of Madison street, was adopted. Mayor reported that the committee from council had contracted with County Commissioners for the lease of the county convicts; also for the lease of the old jail at 85 per month for the upper story, in which to keep the chain gang. Proposition of Marshal Spair to board, clothe and furnish shacks for chain gang, for the sum of twenty five cents per day for each prisoner, was accepted. Aid. Mitchell reported on petition of I’incy Woods Hotel Co., fo“ hy drant, and same was referred to water committee with power to act. O11 motion of Aid. Wright, laun dries were included in general charge of rates to hotels. Following accounts were ordered paid. E. <). Thompson, -8201.0.’!, Mitchell <t McIntyre, 8114 15 Petition of A. F. Kichstcr for li quor license was laid on the table till next regular meeting Council adjourned. Jas. F. Evans, Acting Clerk. Now that the town has the clmin gang, and will pay all expenses inci dent to the keeping and care of the convicts, it, is desirable that at a- ear ly a day ns practicable there should be a barracks or city prison provided. Deputy Sheriff Tom Singletary, who keeps the jail, says that owing to sick, ness in his family, he will not be able to accupy the new jail before the 1st ol June. Attorney A. R. Jones left yesterday morning far Milledgeville to attend the Episcopal church convention. From there he will go to Augusta to be present at the meet of the state bar association. Joe Dryer, court stenographer, went down to Quitman last night to attend Brooks court. L. B. M. H. The motive in buying and selling is to make money.
