A negro, giving his name as Henry Space, was arrested yesterday morn ing, after a lively chase, on suspicion of having stolen a pair of oxen. The negro went to Mr. I’cte Bone early yesterday with a pair of splendid black oxen, and sold them at a price much below their value. Mr. Bone became suepicious that the oxen did not belong to the negro, and told him he would have to wait until the banks opened for the money. Mr. Bone then informed the authorities of his suspicions. The officers watched his movements for some time. Space fi nally became restless at so much atten tion from the police, and after another unsuccessful attempt to collect the money, started oft in a fast walk, and from a walk to a run. And then the chase commenced. He was finally captured by some gentlemen near the water tower, and placed in jail until the authorities can investigate the ownership of the oxen. OUR The Convention cf Citizens. Northern As the call for this convention, to he held June IStli, at Douglasville, and its object become more known, interest in the matter increases. The people of the south and those of the north, who are looking to the gen eral good of the whole country with out prejudice, begin to see the possi bilities for good to come from such a movement, and letters are pouring in from every section of a most encourag ing character. The many happy, contented and prosperous citizens of our state who have come from northern states, are anxious that all the people of their former homes should know the truth in regard to the status of tilings in the south. And an actual knowledge of this, as well as our delightful climate, onr world of undeveloped resources, is all that is necessary to set a tide of labor and capital in this direction that will relieve the glut of capital in east ern cities and towns, and at the same time cause these forests rich in the finest timber, nnd these hills full of valuable ores, to yield up their treasures and make the whole sunny south to blossom like a garden. Wc are glad to see our state news papers—always foremost in every work looking to the prosperity of the people—taking hold of this enterprise and pushing the movement along to a success. At the last meeting of the commit tee numbers of letters were read from different sections of the state, showing that the people begin to fully appre ciate the importance of the movement. —Atlanta Constitution. There are a number of northern gentlemen living in and around Thoin- asvillc, and wo hope some of them will attend this convention. They would, no doubt, testify to the orderly character of our citizens. A northern man, if lie is a gentleman, will find himself at home in Georgia. Some Snake. A large rattlesnake was viewed by quite a number at Varucdoe’s stables yesterday. The snake was killed on the road to Sanford’s, Tuesday, by Mrs. Ella Espey, of Chicago, assisted by Lad Bailey, a colored driver. The nake had eight rattles. Sunday School!
