The election of Mr. Carlisle to the
Senate increases the chances of Char-
ly Crisp, to be speaker of the next
house.
Sa n Tones pocketed something
over $2,000 lor eight days preaching
in Charlotte, N. C. Sam is a very
thrifty and prudent financier. Few
preachers get so well paid.
(lovcrnor Gordon, in a speech to a
colored convention in Atlanta, the
other day, advised the colored people
to stick to old Georgia. And they’
do it. Very few colored people in this
state advocate immigration.
The young Emperor of Germany
opened the Reichstag at Berlin yes
terday with a speech from the throne.
It is very conservative in tone, and
has given assurances of continued
peace.
An insane asylum, situated near
Montreal, Canada, was destroyed by
fire yesterday. It housed 1300 insane
persons, male and female. About
1100 escaped, the others being burned.
The poor creatures refused to leave
the building, and could not be lorced
out.
Witty John Allen, of Mississippi,
perpetrated the following in a speech
in congress the other day:
John Wanny runs the Sunday school,
I.evi thus the bar.
The bnby runs the White House.
A mi. damn it, here we are.
It is said that Wannaker and Har
rison were drinking a glass of ice
tea, when they read the effusion, and
that both of them were very much
shocked.
There is a general movement among
laborers all over the world, to reduce
a days work to eight hours. The
New York Times, in discussing the
movement, says:
The farmer is both laborer and
employer, and never thinks of stopping
work in eight hours. He works while
the sun shines, and only knocks off at
dusk. He knows that if he quits work
at the end of eight hours the loss will
fall upon himself, and if his hired man
approached him with a demand for
eight hours he would stand stupefied
with indignation.
Flow of the Mississippi.
Nkw Oiii.f.axs, May 6.—A special
Jo the Picayune from Shreveport says:
"‘The river is still rising and is now
seven inches above the mark of 1S84.
The steamer New Haven, from Gar
Take, arrived here yesterday. The
■country from l'ulton down is flooded.
'The situation is distressing. Thous
ands ol head of cattle and hogs have
ibeen drowned, but fortunately no loss
«ol human life has occurred.”
The days have grown warm and full
of soft sweet spring odors, flowers are
budding and blooming in profusion,
trees are leaved into richest green,
and spread their soft shadows over the
emerald turf beneath; birds sing their
sweetest lays, and the whole earth has
arisen from her winter’s nap, and
dressed herself in her accustomed, yet
ever now garh of beauty and freshness.
’Tis the season poets love, lover’s love,
and who is it that would not love to?
wander over the beautiful woods,
down by the little lmhbling brook
wiieu its every ripple seemed to speak
of some loved one.
The line rain of Monday is the most
welcome visitor we have had in many
weeks. Crops are in good condition,
and the fanners are wearing an air of
contentment.
Quite a parly went out on a seining
pic 11 ic Monday The party consisted
of C. FT. Hurst, (>. (r. Fleetwood, G.
M. Bullock and II. A. I’crry. They
report plenty of fun and fish. Old
man ‘‘Rap” never fails to bring ’em
in. We saw him present a very fine
trout to Dr. Baston, which made us
feel like we wouldn’t object to ail in
vitation to supper.
Mrs. Brown, daughter and son, of
Butler, after spending a week with
her sister, Mrs. M. E. Bullock, re
turned home Monday.
La Grippe has had a firm grip on
G. M. Bullock, L. R. Sills and II. C.
Freeman, the past week. We are glad
to see them out again.
Mr. John Lanier, of Wayctoss,
spent Sunday night with Dr. Baston's
family.
Mr. J. N. Anderson and family re
turned home from a pleasant trip
Thursday. Mr. Anderson took in Sa
vannah, while Mrs. Anderson visited
relatives in Boston.
The friends of Mr. M. A. Berry are
glad to see him home for a few day
Dr. Baston has made quite an ad
dition to his drug store in the way of
soda fount. He is now readv to

in town.
Mr. Solomon Sills, of Florida, visited
his daughter, Mrs. White, last week.
Mrs. J. W. Isom spent Sunday with
Mrs. G. M. Bullock.
Married at the residence ot the

What has Charlie Williams done
with his suggestions for the Tliomas-
ville Cotton Mills. He is certainly
on the right road for a brilliant end
ing, if he lingers not on the road. If
he will push the matter and see what
can he done, 1 would like a few

The past week here has been one
continual holiday among the S. S.
and military company.
Decoration day was a complete
success, and although happening on
Saturday was well attended. Many
leading wholesale business houses
closing in the afternoon to attend the
services.
The Electric street car line here is
certainly a successful venture, and
does a thriving business. You very
often see two ears coupled together
and filled to over-flowing with pas
sengers. You can go around the city
and to East Macon for a “nick,” just
ask Joe Stephens how it is,—but I
promised not to tell.
Macon i.< like Thomnsville, on a
genuine boom, and what is better, the
right sort of a boom. I do not think
that there is a day that passes but

There has just been completed in
Viucville a large cotton factory, and
they have not as yet been running
three months, I don’t think, and the
directors, I am informed has decided
to put in more machinery, aud double
its preseut capacity. Then the knit
