The Peach Crop.
It is very generally conceded that
the present will be a poor fruit year in
Georgia. In middle Georgia the
peach trees are said to be dying by
the thousand. \ writer in the Tele
graph, alluding to the rause, says:
First, the excessive fruitage of last
season. This excess of fruit exhaus
ted the trees and left them in the fall
with but little life-giving sap above the
roots. The roots were in great need
of abundant moisture to send
through the branches. The amount
of rain fall in December and January
was unusually light, in lact was
most nothing. To add to ihis unfa
vorable state of affairs the weather
was unseasonably warm. It would
seem at a glance that a warm winter
would be favorable to the life of the
tree, but upon more careful reflection
we find it is not so. A warm winter
and abundance of rain would have been
preferable to the warm, dry winter
through which we have just past, but
the chances ot life would have been
enhanced ir. the exhausted peach trees
it we could have had a cold time
through December and January, ac
companied by plenty ol moisture,
The influence of the cold upon the
branches of the trees would have been
sinnliar to the effects of cold upon
animal life—invigorating, exhilarating
life-giving. Cold is as essential to
life in the vegetable kingdom as it is
in the animal. It is just as essential
to the hie and growth of plants as
warmth and moisture.
