Georgia babies will get a great deal of kissing this year; the candidate will be abroad in the land. Base ball has broken out afresh. It will probably become epidemic. Dan ger lurks in every passing breeze. A dispatch from Atlanta said Gen eral Clement A. Evans would be a candidate for governor. The General has since declined to run. Carlisle should succeed Beck .in the Senate. He is a finished parlia mentarian, and would bother Mr. Ingalls a good deal. Both the State Temperance Con veution and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union have adjourned. The former met in Atlanta and the latter in Rome. The “hip pocket artillery” should go. The killing of a prominent mer chant in Atlanta the other day, in a dispute over fifty-four cents, emphn sises the demand. The latest plan for reaching the North pole is to blow up the ice at the pole with dynamite. But how in the thunder arc they going to get the dynamite to the place? Georgia is the only Southern State which has ever floated a 3A per cent, bond. Good for Georgia. And they were sold to a Southern man, John H. Inman. The prohibition question, now that the Supreme Court has decided that packages of liquor, unbroken, can be shipped bom one state to another, and sold, will go into national politics Senator Colquitt of Georgia recent' ly said: From the present signs nothing is more certain than that the democracy will carry the next con- cress and the presidential election of 1892.” Sam Jones says: “lean take my Bible and put both the Democratic and Republican parties in hell any morning before breakfast Give ’em a chance, Mr. Jones; wait until after dinner It has happened at last; but really we have been expecting it; A negro named John Crittiugtou was captured in East Baltimore last week as he was ruuuing oil with a hot stove which he had stolen from an oyster boat at the wharf. The fire broke out in the paint works. The employees of the works narrowly escaped with their lives. The loss is estimated at ?too, ooa, about equally divided between the two firms. How a Connecticut Yankee Bought Ozone in Thomasville. A newspaper correspondent in Washington, from Texas, thus treats of the typical Georgian: It has been said that the Georgi an is the Southern yanker. He is a man full of resources and that quality which the shmgv tendency of the times calls‘gall.’ I have the utmost, respect for them, because of their irrepressiliility, their confidence in themselves ami their pride in their State. They are rustlers from away back, and I'liavc never met one, and vet I have met a great many, who either did not have a speech to deliver or a scheme to carry out. Time nor conditions wither him. He is confi dent and perfectly at home in leading in prayer, in running a convention or in making a real estate deal. A res idence of two weeks in a precinct in Africa would warrant him in cither tunning for king or in fixing the wires so he would be chief counsellor. Set down in the heart of Asia, he would he on top of the flesh pot with a ladle, and a large one at that, in his hand, an hour after his arrival. “Wherever lie may he he is a Geor gian. Absence from the State makes him none the less a Georgian. I have met them in Texas who had left their State when they were chil- dcn, and they could repeat the speeches delivered by Ben Hill, Bob Toombs, Alex Stephens and other Georgia celebrities, and do it in splen did and affecting style, hut still keep ing the Georgia business eye wide open by turning a jack from the bot tom ever and anon. I have in my life, though I never sported to any great extent, lost lots of good valuable dol lars by my eyes becoming moistened by affecting quotations by Georgians from the speeches of the great men of that State. “I distinctly remember of haying run up on a full baud in a Georgian’s fingers 011 one occasion just after he had recited to me a part of Bob Toombs’ speech on the proposition of the Georgia Legislature to rally aud hoist the American flag just after the war closed. I did not hear it de livered, but it cost me enough to buy several Georgia meals to have it re peated to me. “But the object of this communica- tiou is to show how nicely they work the yankee even in these times. The latter had hardly whipped him in the last war before lie proposed a part nership in business. He didn’t have auy money or any merchandise, and in fact nothing as a basis for a part nership or to speculate on except some land, which he called a garden spot or mine, according to the character of the yankee with whom lie was talk ing. The result was that while the other Southern States were staggering from the blows delivered them by the Northern enemy. Georgia had applied a piece of raw beef to her eye and was up and around rustling among the enemy for his ducats just as if nothing had ever happened. “It was the first to. recover. It settled carpet-bag rule in a jiflv. It rolled up a Democratic majority of a size tnat impressed the country with the idea that it had never lost a voter. It weut right out, si to speak, to take charge of the Union, and the steps taken by its energetic people at the end of the war have never halted. They are working ns persistently for tlicir advancement and the develop ment of their State as ever. They have iron for sale. If a man doesn t want iron they will sell him the finest stone on earth, the finest farms on earth, the finest water poweron earth, and if they can’t strike a trade with him in these lines they will propose to sell him the finest ozone on earth. O, yes, wc have the finest ozone on earth. It is found in its purest cle ment and essence right here in South Georgia. The article in and around Thoraasville is unadulterated, aud we give the privilige of breathing it, with every peice of land bought by North ern parties. It is just thrown in, as it were. Aud this reminds us, as Mr. Lincoln used to say, of a story. Last winter one of our live real estate dealers was trying to sell a piece of land to a shrewd Connecticut yankee. “I kinder calculate” said the gentle man from the laud of wooden nutmegs, “that the price is pretty high;” after the real estate man had fixed the figures. “() no,” said the dealer in dirt, “the property is wortli every dollar asked. Why, just look at those pear trees. Do you know sir, that there is a fortune in LeContc pears”? The Connecticut man didn’t seem to catch on to the pear rack et, iuti- mating that he simply wanted a win ter home, not a pear orchard. Taking the cue the versatile agent said: “You are right. Why should you bother yourself about fruit, or any products of the soil. 5 011 are able live without these. Now I have another place, “pointing ton clump of pines crowning a lovely elevation a fow hundred yards away,” which will just suit you exactly. Look there I high and dry ; the air laden with the aroma of the pines hearing healing on its wings; the warm southern sun shine plays among the swaying houghs, bringing back the flush of health to wasted cheeks, sending the life blood, renewed and purified, through every vein, while the eye kindles with new life and hope. There arc several parties anxious to buy the property, but I would prefer selling it to you, ns I am sure you will improve it handsomely. I will sell you that place for 8 The eloqueuce aud earnestness of the would be seller, had some visible effect, but, true to his teachings, train ing and state, the gentleman from Connecticut was not the man to close a bargain without an effort to lower the price. I will give you 8 for the place,” said he. Can’t take it,” said the imper turbable agent. “We I don’t think the land is worth any more” said the Connecticut man, “You forget,” and the agent em phasized his remarks by a majestic and graceful swoop and sweep of his right arm, in which a good portion of the earth and air were embraced, “that no charge is made for the ozone.” And the man from Connecticut now owns the property, reaching, as it does, down to China; and up—well lie has oodles of ozone. And we ex pect to make a good democrat out of him in a year or two. Lee's Monument.
