Macon, May 7.—The following
letter,’received by Col. Wm H. Koss,
,,f this city, from the mother of the
•Dmighther of the Confederacy”
settles, beyond nil question, the truth
of the report of the approaching nup
tials:
De.vu Cot,. Ross—Not that, you
have not probably heard it, but my
hind regard for you causes me to
announce my daughter's engagement
t,, M r . Alfred Wilkinson, of Syracuse,
New York. I think the young couple
have every chance of happiness to
gether. My husband knew and liked
1) ini, and appreciated that a regard
which had existed nearly four years
could not be uprooted. Send your
good wishes for her here, as she sails
on her return home on the 10th of
May. I hoped to join her there, but
1 find 1 cannot do so.
With kind regards to Mrs. Ross and
a large portion for yourself, 1 am
V. Jefferson Davis.

•■Mr. McMillan got in some sturdy
blows on the republicans, in discussing
the tariff this week.
“Wool hats had been made last year
he said to the amount of $8,000,000;
the labor cost was 22 per cent.; the
present duty was 08 per cent.—the
committee proposed to make it 111
per cent.”
Just let the wool hat boys under
stand that they are paying 111 per
cent, on their head gear, and they
will make the fur fly.
