Trusts and combines arc the order of the day. They oppress and bleed all classes. Down with them. Give the toiler a chance for his bread. It is generally thought that Hon. Henry G. Turner, will not have any opposition for another term. He is one of the ablest representatives from Georgia. In a speech on the McKinley tariff hill, on last Saturday, Mr. Cummings, of New York, said: “The present session of CoDgress is a raging sea of ravenous Republican legislation.” The Sun says thousands of ladies boarded the new cruiser, the Balti more, looking like so many "angels in petticoats.” Angels in petticoats is good ; very good. Mr. Dauphin offers the state of Louisiana 8”,000 per day for the period of twenty-five years, for the privilege of running the Louisiana lottery. Will the state bite at the tempting bait ? We sincerely hope not. Matt Quay has the republican party in his grasp, and now he wants to control the world—the New York World. The World will make it particularly interesting for Mathew, in that libel suit. Go in, Mat, and get mashed. will So with tl: Howe Tin* f goo*. If the farmers of the South raise their own provision supplies they will be able to hold their cotton indefinitely. This would heat the sub-treasury scheme, even were the scheme right and practicable.—Sparta Ishraaelite. Unlimited silver coinage is the jingling issue, just now, in the Sen ate. Though lost to sight, they are still to memory dear. Give the dol lar of our daddies a showing. The demouitu/.atiou of silver a few years since was an outrage. It is the poor man’s money. A splendid hron/.c monument was erected the other day, at Coloma, Cal ifornia, to the memory of James 'Wil son Marshal. On the ltlth day of Jan uary, 1848, Marshal, while working in a mill race, whete Coloma now stands, discovered gold. Fabulous millious have been made out of the lahorei’s discovery. Marshal, poor fellow, never realized anything scarcely by the find. He died poor, while Flood, Mackey, O’Brien, Sha ron aud others have piled up hun dreds of millions. Such is the irony ! of fate. Drawing Nearer and Nearer The speed of steamships across the Atlantic is being accelerated every day. Noticing this fact, the News says: The proposition that the voyage across the Atlantic ocean may be re duced to about 1,700 miles, instead of the 3,052 miles of the route between New York aid Liverpool, and that the time of the passage may be re duced from about seven days to about three and a half is immensely attrac tive in the statement, although at first it seems preposterous. A company has actually been organized in Canada which proposes to thus shorten the time and distance between the old and new world by constructing a rail way along the north shore of the St, Lawrence river and gulf from Quebei to St. Charles bay, on the Labrador coast, a distance o( 844 miles, and placing a line of fast steamers on the route from St. Charles bay to Milford Haven, Wales, where extensive harbor facilities have for some lime been awaiting traffic which did not come. The southeast coast of Labrador reaches far out into the ocean, and a line drawn due east shows the shortest possible route between the American continent and the British Isles. The Fastest Time in America. An Indian Nun. Yankton, S. D.. May 14.—Miss Josephine Crowfeather, a full blooded (Sioux maiden, has become a benedic- tiuc nun. Her father is aSioux chief. A Gale at Augusta. Auol'Sta, Ga., May 14 A severe wind and rain storm visited this city this afternoon, partially unroofing sev eral houses and blowing down trees and fences. Georgia Grows. Twenty years ago Georgia, under a Republican administration, could gel only 80 for a bond hearing 7 per cent, interest. Now capitalists scram ble for her HA per cent, at par. And yet some people wonder that the (South is solid.—Macon Telegraph. This is a last age. Referring to the rapid transit between ^ew York and Washington city, the News says: The competition for the Washing, ton business continues to increase the speed of trains. The Pennsylvania railroad announces that alter May 11 the time of the “Congressional limited from New York to Washington will be reduced to 5 hours and 5 minutes. The present time is 5 hours and 20 minutes. Allowing 13 minutes for the ferry from New York to Jersey City, the running time of tlte train is 4 hours and 52 minutes. The total distance from Jersey City to Wash ington is 224.53 miles. The speed, including slops, will he, therefore, 46.1 miles per hour. The Baltimore and Ohio will also accelerate its 3:30 o’clock p. m. train, reducing the time to 5 hours, the distance being 225.3 miles. The speed, including slops, will be 48.6 miles per hour. This will doubtless he the fastest train in Amer ica for the distance, and it is doubt- full if another train can be found in the world that runs 225 miles at this rate, including slops. A Grand Body of Workers. An exchange, speaking of the meeting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian church, at Asheville, says: The body embraces 2,.‘521 churches; 1,143 ministersihas over 1(11,000 com municants; over 100,000 scholars in its Sunday schools and Bible classes, and gave during last year, for all purposes, congregational and benevo lent, 81,1512,805.
