Editor TiMES-f Two years ago I sat beneath the same oak, on the same seal, near the same grove, where E sit now to write to home paper. Last Wednesday, Hon. Arthur Pat ten and the writer took the train for Jacksonville. Arthur was on his an nual trip to visit his aged parents at Elienton, on the Manatee river. It is not a difficult task to lead even a retractory mule hack to pastures whose toothsome virtues lie has once tested. So with me. A very small amount of eloquence eottltl persuade me to renew the pleasure of two years ago. Arthur grows eloquent painting the delights of hunting and fishing in the supposed land of the young “Ma- roouers.” We spent onr first night in Jack sonville. We met Jim Massey, an old Thomas county hoy. He lias a good position in a leading shoe house of the city. Like all Thomas county boys he is full of business. He took us to a show where we saw a young raau, n citizen of the town, run a large needleaud thread through his car, and other parts of his body, and once through his tougue. I examined him closely, and know he did this The places hied, but lie said it did not pain him. I see front the Jacksonville- pa pers that another crank lias outdid him in this self-laceration aud endu ance. Wc had to lie over several hours s Sanford, but was kept in doors with “great sluices of remorseless drown.’ I procured a copy of the "Voting Ma nxmen” nt Jacksonville, the belter to enable me to enjoy our contemplated marooning expedition in the keys at the opening of Tampa Bay. We had an aggravating delay at Tampa, being n few minutes too late Sig*n of the BIGr BOOT. CURTRIGLEET & DA-ISTLEL, 108 Broad St. him ameuable to either the state or municipal law, aud every mother’s son of them will do all they can to shield one another. The Yhor City constabulary have a hard time ferreting out crime, if an American does not happen to be a witnees, it is useless to try the offend er for any crime, for murder down, for lack of evidence. Plenty of witnesses are ready to swear him out. If they sec a man knock another in the head, they know nothing about it on the stand ; they soon prove an alibi. Their women are a sort of slaves. The men keep a vigilant eye on them and treat them very cruelly. If au officer finds a wife crying, and with unmistakable evidence of recent flog ging from iter brutal husband, yet she will deny that her husband did it. If a policeman catch two of them actu ally in the act of fighting, they and a cloud of witnesses will swear they were only playing, even though ruby drops may be trickling from recent wounds. We took a peep at Mr. Plant’s Tam pa rival to Mr. Flagler’s St. Augus tine grand hostlery, the Tamp Bay Ho tel. It is a magnificent building, and I will not attempt to describe it. The kitchen and dining room are an im mense building itself, and is located about a hundred yards from the main building. Ws missed our steamer, but five o’clock Friday morning, we dropped down the Hillsborough river, through the hay of the same name, down into that pretty sheet of green water, Tam pa Bay, and after several hours steam ed into the lovelv Manatee. A hospitable southern welcome awaited us at Elienton, the home of Col Patten. A stranger will lie used with such open hearted cordiality, that he can Init feel at home right away. Wc will leave for a fishing trip in a few days at the month of Manatee, nda lower down tiie gulf. Of course 1 will be able to give some healthy fish stories to your read ers. J. L. II. L. B. M. H. It is a rare sight, worth seeing We were a little rusty ill our Spanish, and the operatives gabbled their native tongue too rapidly for our English speaking cars. They are mostly Cubans, but some are .Spaniards, The Cubans are botli negroes and whites, but there is no social distinc tion. A white Cuban is often seen with a black wife, and a large covey of half breed piccaninnies. The white women ntarry only white husbands, but they visit and otherwise associate with them. Neither a white or negro Cuban Will have anything to do with an American negro. They regard them selves ns a better class ot mortals than our Uncle Mingo's, Aunt Dinah’s and their sons and daughters. A Cuban does seem possessed of superior intel ligence to Uncle Sam’s pets. A Spaniard will not nssociatc with the Cuban negro, and has hut little to do with the Cubans. Of course, the white Cubans are the lowest class of whites on their native island home. While tho Spaniards and Cubans seem to hate each other, they both fear and respect Americans. Ordina rily they will do an Amcricnn a favor much sooner than a Cuban would a Spaniard, and vice versa. Bat let one of either class do something to make 1 For anaemic people W. W. C. ia a boon.
