B. Bl ltn. Iliialncx. Malinger. They Can’t Swallow it. Some prominent republicans kicking about the McKinley tariff hill. Even in Ohio, where the party usually touches elbows on all issues, there is a revolt. The McKinley hill is too much for ex-Attorney General Baldwin and John Overmyer, ex-chairman of the Ohio Republican State Committee. The former has left the party, and the latter says of the bill: “Only a general system of trading, selling out and log-rolling can pass such a bill. Not a single item iu McKinley’s pro tected list lias enough merit in itself to enable it to pass either House of Congress, standing alone and unsup ported by the corrupt combination ol all the other ilems. IIow, then, can the entire bill, sired by fraud and born of corruption, ever be sustained before the grent jury of the American people? The fact is. every tariff bill, favoring the few and oppressing the manv, bears in its own body the seeds of disintegration and death. Its -5,000 or 4,000 unrighteous and indefensible items are constantly attacked and undermined all over the country. Its scattered and selfish horils of de fenders can make but a feeble and sporadic resistance, while its oppo nents—the great army of consumers, the masses, people ngninst whom it stands as a menace and an oppression —bears down upon it everywhere in solid, invincible columns.” The Black Man’s Fortune. Dariun, On., May 14.—In Sun day’s issue, under the head of “Ne gro Enterprise,” return of negroes in Georgia, you have the estate of Hen ry Todd, late ot McIntosh county, estimated at SO,000 ; which is not cor rect. At the time of bis death, three years ago, his estate was said to be worth 880,000. It was not at that time known that some of this amount was his wife’s estate. The executors of the estate, Messrs. Adam Strain, James K. Clarke and Henry Hunt ington, will wind up the estate at this May termof court, and it will amouut to near 8.10,000. He has bequeathed to his church (colored Baptist) ten per cent of this: to his wife’s church (white Prcshyte- r : -n) ten per cent, and to the Mctlio dist (white and colored) and to the Episcopal (white) five per cent each. He also bequeathed to both the white nml colored schools a good percentage. —Ex. ] of organization ia party ranks it is needed now. Democrats must lie ! united. There is no time forjdivision, ! subtraction of experiment. There are several districts in Georgia which the negro vote could he made very troublesome if it were brought out, and Chairman Buck seems de termined that it shall he brought out. Our people must see that party organization is maintained in every county. Whether primaries or con ventions arc agreed upon by the Democratic party, such meetings should reflect the will of the people and outside issues should he kept down as far as possible. There is no time for class candidates or the advance ment of special interests. There is abundant and vital need for standing together to promote the unity of the Democratic party and the safety of the white race.—Augusta Chronicle. Thomas county, and the second congressional district, will show a solid, unbroken front. There will he no bickerings or divisions here. The democracy of this section has been tried iu many a hard, and, at times, unequal fight; but they have never faltered. May 22.—|Special.[ —Yesterday, in Robinson county su perior court, 'William Childs,a negro, was sentenced to the county chain- gang for two years for obtaining money under fatso pretenses. His plan was novel. He traveled through the country, telling the negroes that he was authorized as agent of presi dent Harrison to collect two dollar from each one of his race, and gave a certificate that every one who paid this amount would receive two littu died dollars in return, lie had sue. needed in gathering several hundred dollars, when his scheme was exposed by some one of his dupes, and he wa arrested. The engine drivers can stop the train and communicate by telephone. This eommunicatioa can be effected when the engines are cither running or still. The Girl Who Works. An unknown author pays this trib ute to the girl who works : “The girl who works—God bless her. She is brave and active and not too proud to earn her own living nor ashamed to he caught at her daily task. She smiles at you from behind the count er and desk. There is memory of her sewn into each silent gown. She is like the beautiful mountaineer al ready far up the hill, and the sight of her should be a fine inspiration for us all. It is an honor to know this girl —to he worthy of her regard. Her hands may he stained by dishwashing, sweeping, factory grease or printer’s ink, but it is an honest and helping hand. It stays misfortune from homes ; it is one shield that protects many a forlorn little family from the almshouse and asylum.” The New Mexican Beverage Non-Alcoholic. Delicic us. ii Frui-Miz!” Cooling. Ground was hioken to-day at Kimball, the new town in Marion county, on the hanks of Tennessee. Notwithstanding the fact that the starting of new towns in the South i* now of frequent occurrence, yet this occa sion was regarded of unusual importance and many distinguished citizens of this and other States assembled to honor the event. Major Thomas, President of the Nashville, CliAttanonga and St. Louis K. R. brought in his private car a party composed of some of the fairest daughters of Tennessee, one of whom drew the Hag to the top of the stately liberty pole that had been planted on the summit of a symmetrical Indian mound that is one of the interesting features of this love ly locality. Prof. Edward Hull, Director of the Geological Survey of Ireland, threw the first spadeful of earth, and Prof. J, M. Sal ford, State Geologist of Tennessc, the next. The brief inaugural address of Hon. 11. I Kimball, the Chief Executive Manager of this enterprise, was the central event of [the day. In bis cpigramatic style he pointed out to the people how this event was the key to bringing out the immense treasures of the whole Sequatcliee Valley, and por trayed in glowing terms the vast industrial devclopemcnt that would result in the es tablishment of a manufacturing center at this point that would rival the most noted places of the kind in Great Britinn anti Ger many. It is well known in this section that Mr. Kimball invariably accomplishes far more than he promises, therefore his brief address lias had a most magical effect, and it is the universal opinion {here that the christening s^lc of cjtv lots nt Kimball, June 10th, Uth ami 13th, will be ni all re spects the most successful of any yet belli in the South, and that the purchasers will chiefly be genuine settlers who have abso lute faith in the future of this enterprise.
