Farmers only come to town now when business compels them to do so. I hey are busy with their crops. Rev. S. S. Sweet, who is traveling in Europe, is writing some very in structive and interesting letters to the Macon Telegraph. The three candidates for commis sioner of agriculture, Messrs. A strong effort to strike out the appropriation for them was defeated. Important news was cabled yesterday from Europe ; the emperor of Ger many lias sprained his ankle. This is terrible. The world will stand aghast nt this startling news. George Francis Train was ungal- lant enough to heat the record of the two young ladies who recently went around the world., Train made it in sixty-five days. This beats all previ ous records. Rudyard Kipling is a new star in the literary firmament. His poems are attracting wide attenlion. They are said to be charming in style, with out stiffness, running and rippling like a murmuring brook. The legislature of Massachusetts has passed a bill for the extermination of the English sparrow in that state. We hope our city fathers will follow the lead of Massachusetts in this mat ter. Hut what if the naughty little pests refuse to be exterminated? There’s the rub. A lot of filibusters are talknig about seizing Lower California. Ge ographically it belongs to the United States, legally it belongs to Mexico. This government would quickly put a stop to the movement, if an attempt should be made to steal the strip. If Editor Sheppard, who recently suggested that Harrison call out a million of men to prevent any more confederate flags being displayed, or any more monuments erected to reb els, really wants a job, let him come down to Cedar Keys and tackle Mayor Cottrell. The “original package,” is getting to be an issue in prohibition states. Can a man be said to be an “original package,” when lie goes home lull ? He is very apt to hear some “original" expressions, when his spouse admits him. We have frequently called atten tion to both tlx waste and the value of the pine timber in Sout 'em Geor gia. Our forests are melting before the turpentine and saw mill men. Discussing the timber question, the Times-Union, of Jacksonville, says: “The rapid and wasteful desliuclion of the forests of this country lias long been regarded with alarm by those who arc personally inlcrcsled in the subject and by public spirited citizens who have the welfare of the country at heart. That droughts and freshets are most destructive in a country deprived of its forest covering is a generally recognized fact. It is also admitted that the lima is fast ap proaching when all kinds of valuable timber will be a’nrtningly scarce. Considering what a vast amount of timber is used for fuel, for building purposes, for railroad construction, for furniture manufacture and for ship mci-t abroad, and how much there is wasted, it is evident that the next generation of Americans will have to economize wood and use other mate rials to a large extent. One of the most wasteful ways of using wood is in the shape of railroad ties. Some of the best kinds of tim ber are used for this purpose, and die demand is enormous .and constantly increasing. It is estimated that the number now in use in the United States is 422,400,000. These last on an average only seven years, so that fer renewal 60,342,857 are required annually, besides over 20,000,000 a year used in the construction of new roads. Allowing 40 feet of lumber to each tie wc find that 3.258,514,280 feet are used annually for railroad ties.” The ralroads, a few of them, arc introducing steel rails. This will, if steel rails are generally adopted, re lieve the drain very materially. There is a mine of wealth in the pine forests of Southern Georgia,—if they can be preserved. Flaying Wannamaker. The Constitution pays its respects to Mr. Wannamaker, the pious fraud, in a scorching editorial. While in dulging in cheap cant about the spir itual welfare of the poor, he is working poor girls in his great factories in this country and in Europe, on starvation wages. Our Atlanta contemporary after showing up the man, concludes thus: “The real oppressors of the poor — the worst enemies of. their race—the most cruel of all slave drivers, are not the men whose vices and loose living excite our horror. On the contrary, they are the smooth and decorons devils of society—1< c Iflifills and Uriah Heaps, whose road to success is drenched with the tears of the vic tims ol their progress and patronage. “Rough word-.-, these. Perhaps they will make the Philadelphia slave driver wince, and dump another load of lus boodle into a mission ot a club of re publican c ampaign toughs. He can afford it. He has only to starve a few more working-girls to get his donations hack with interest.” Hendricks’ Statue. Indianapolis, May 25.—July 1 lias been fixed as the date for unveiling the monument of the late Vice Presi dent Hendricks on the state house grounds of this city. The address will bcdclivcd by United States Sena tor Turpie. The President, ex Presi dents, Vice President and members of the cabinet and governors of all the states will be invited to attend. The committee on arrangements extends a cordial invitation to societies, clubs and other organizations of the state and elsewhere to be present and par ticipate in the ceremonies, and request the attendance of the general public. Mr. Hendricks was one of the gran dest democra's, and purest of men. It is eminently fitting that his memory should be perpetuated by 5. monument reared among the people lie loved and served so well.
