CURTRIGrHT & DANIEL, 108 Broad St. Pear Blight. “The KicfTers are blighting badly.” The above statement in the Times- Enterprise we consider a little pre vious. After hearing that several Kcifler orchards were blighting, Capt. Jen nings and myself went to examine for ourselves. Heretofore, the Kcifler has escaped the blight so successfully, that we were led to doubt that they had the real destructive pear blight as reported. The first Kcifler orchard that we examined was that of Air. Blackshean At first glance, one would be likely to pronounce his trees blighted. Ac companied by Air. Sanford, we next examined his orchard of supposed blighted Kietfers. The result of our investigation is that wc failed to find any blight on the Keitier trees ex amined. The dead twigs were tlie result of the freeze in early spring, caused by the rupture of the tissues and cells. They being the weakest part of the tree, of course suffered first from the dry weather. We have no doubt but that flic Kcifler pears arc entirely free from blight. Respectfully, ’ll. \Y. Stone. Alumni Society Meeting. The elders, with long hair, parted in the middle, occupy a table in the main audience room The cooking is done in the basement of the church. An ox was slaughtered to-dav for meals and for the Lor'ds Supper. The slaughter of the lamb was omitted. Bishops David Fitter and John Iinrtzler and Elders Cline and Buck- er officiated. Then the backs of the scats were transformed into tables for the celebration of the holy communi on. Upon each table were ten water bowls and twenty spoons. Then each member present was appealed to to forgive any ill feeling engendered du ring the past year. I-’irst, feet washing was indulged in. The brethren girt their loins with tow els, and washed and wiped eaelt oth ers feet. Tlie women, arrayed in black dresses and white caps, also washed eacli other's feet, while hymns were sung. After this the Lord’s Supper was spread, consisting of beef soup and white bread, with rice. Ev ery set of four brethren and oycry set of four sisters ate soup out of one dish, two sitting one side of the nar row' table and two on tlie other, so that four could easily dip their bread into the bowl aud use their spoons. Then came the “holy kiss,” tlie brethren and sisteis kissing each other on the lips, I'ufcrmented grape wine was drunk. Tlie unleavened bread in strips was passed hv one brother to another, but ti e bishops broke broad for the sisters.
