The Company having guaranteed me that interest in settle ment of the accounts, I very cheerful ly sever my connection with the busi ness." The Supreme Court Defied. Prrrsr.iritt;, 1’a., May 27.—The "original package" decision was men tioned iu court here yesterday, and aroused Judge Ewing’s ire. “Should a case involving this question come before me,” he exclaimed, "the United States Supreme Court will have an other chance at it. 1 regard that decision as an entering wedge that will cvcuipaUy destroy the liberties of ' the people. I have become so thoroughly grounded in my opinion as to State’s rights that I think there is little danger of my changing the views I hnve during the remainder of my life. It is a healthy sign to sec some of these old moss-back republicans, wak ing up to the realization of the fact that the states still have some lights. Harrison Off for Cleveland. Washington May 28.—President Harrison and party, consisting of vice President Morton, Secretary Wimlom, Postmaster General Wanamakcr, sec retary Rusk, Attorney General Miller, Representative McKinley and Mar shall Kansdell left 1\ ashington at 7:10 o’clock to-night on a special train over the Pennsylvania road to attend the Garfield memorial service at Clev- land on Decoration day. The execu tive departments nud government printing office will be closed on I)eco- ntion day. Dried Ancestors Burned- Winnipeg, May 2(5.—The Indians of Northern British Columbia are iu a terriule state of excitement, and arc liable 'to' break out in rebellion over the burning of their burying ground. Canadian Indians bury their dead by hanging them in large trees. The Siwash tribe had 300 of their ances tors hung up iu this manner. White huaters set the torcst on fire, and the bodies, dried by years of exposure, burned like tar barrels. Among the Indians there was un controllable grief and they threaten vengcaucc.” There is nothing in the above from which any legitimate conclusion can Ire drawn as to whether these same -'100 have escaped the tire—down yon der. Up There-And Down Here-The Difference. Mr. Alva C. I.owrey, formerly of Carroll Co., Ua., hut forthe past few years a resident of Providence, R* I., is back in Georgia. In an interview with the Constitution, Mr. Lowrcy gives his observations of how the ne gro is treated at the north. We ap pend the following from the inter view : Mr. Lowrcy took quite an interest in the condition ot the negro in Rhode Island. “They don’t have the genuine negro as we sec him here, but mostly a mix ture with the Xarragansett Indians. There was an old darkey who belong ed to Senator Dixon, as polite an old darkey ns ever 1 saw. (>ne day I met him on the street and shook hands with him. Some of the Providence people saw it and were surprised. I see you treat them differently down there." said he, “it is not usual for us to shake hands with them here." ■Yes,” said 1, “we always thought more of the negroes than you do. Speaking of the treatment of the negroes there, Mr. Lowrcy said : * 5 oil see them there drawing or digging clams, lifting the end of a heavy tim ber, or carrying mortar, hut never handling a trowel beside a white man. They may do the .chores or heavy work, but when it comes to plying a white man’s trade, or doing any part of his work that requires skill, like laying of brick or handling a chisel, they don’t do it. The white men ob ject. You d n't sec them at the ho tels, or at. the theaters, unless it is away up in the peanut gallery.” Intelligent colored people should read and ponder over these facts. Somehow, or somehow else, it has been instilled into the minds of the colored people that the southern people are trying to oppress them, and that their only friends are at the north. Never was a more flagrant misstatement of facts made. Time will prove who are the truest and best friends of the no gro race. Chickamauga’s Park. Washington, May ?8.—In the House to day on motion of Mr. Gros- venor of Ohio, the hill was passed appropriating 8125,000 for the estab lishment of a national military park at the battle field of Chickamauga.
