Editor Tijies-Ektihi'RIsk :
In my last communication I prom
ised some fish stories. I expected to
have time on the cruise to put them
down, but we literally had other "fish
to fry.” A professional Nimrod or
stout apostle of Jzaak Walton is usu
ally a liberal user of the paint brush of
imagination. Washington and his
little hatchet are not considered exact
guides.
But such “Innocents Abroad” as
Arthur and I are expected to tell the
truth, the whole truth, and nothing
but the truth, so help us Ananias.
Truth is stranger than fiction, and
since our return have seen its effects
on a few anglers whose experience
has been chiefly in the mighty waters
of Ochlockoncc and lamoncc.
The truth itself* is not believed
By those who have themselves deceived.
Wherever we have told our true
story to gaping, admiring crowds,
some of these same gentry smile in
credulously and l>y slv hints secin to
intimate that Baron .Munchausen,
Gulliver or themselves could have told
something similar had cither gone on a
cruise on the great gulf coast.
We arc sorely tempted to brain n
few of these incorrigihlcs, ns an exam
ple, hut it is human to err and divine
to forgive. We pity their inexperi
ence and pass on.
Our party consisted of Capt. Col
bert, K. B. Fatten, \V. (). Fatten, W.
I. Kirkhoff, Arthur Fatten and the
writer.
Wc chartered a suitable sailing craft
catted and sharpie of Cant. Colbert.
He is as clever an old Jack Tar as
ever trod a deck, ami commanded
haul a lee!”
Tuesday evening the 20th of May
we sailed from the wharf of W. C. Fat
ten. Fair hands waved us a gentle
good bye ns wc passed the lovely home
of Mr. Fatten. We were compelled
to beat against a western head wind
until we were beyond the bar of the
Manatee. But the tide helped us,
and ere old Sol had cast his last fare
well beams on the liquid horizon, oili-
jolly sail dashed merrily across the
billows of Tampa Bay into the smooth
er waters of Pensacola Sound—be
tween Tampa and Sarasota bays. We
cast anchor ofl Fisher's Point.
Fishermen live there, mid judging
from the houses of this little village,
make money. •
Fishing for pompano on the outer
beach seem to lie the most profitable
this time of year.
Wc secured some of these excellent
pan fish, anti there above the silvery
waves and neat'i the listening stars
wc partook of a supper more highly
relished than is known around the
richly covered boards of wealth and
power.
To the west of us lay Anna Maria
key, supposed by many to be the isl
and where the “Young Maroonors”
were cast, after their fearful ride with
a monster devil fish ns the motive
power. But the scenery is not that of
the book. Geo. T. Patten, an intelli
gent and well informed gentleman
says he has often cruised up and down
the gulf coast of this part of Florida,
and has made diligent search for a
place suited to the description in Dr.
Goulding's splendid little fiction, hut
has never found it. The author claims
that the description is faithful to na
ture, and that others have so found it.
As he is a Georgian, aud lias written
such a charming story, we forgive the
license he lias taken with the Florida
coast.
Lulled by the measured and inces
sant sound of breakers on the wind
ward shores of Ana Maria, we tried to
fall into the welcome embrace that
Morpheus is supposed to extend to
mortals when the darkening shadows
of night hove curtained our part of j you are my meat,” and then he makes
this terrestrial ball.
Milton says this god of sleep “hates
gilded roofs and beds of down,” hut
he does not always distill the necessa
ry poppy on the optic lids, though wc
arc rocked in the cradle of the deep,
and the gentle lullaby of the waves
bid us lest.

Near Longboat inlet Wednesday
morning, we fished over 1 ho rocky bed
of “Forty foot channel”. Grouper,
black bass, rock crab, dog fish and
cats, were the trophies of the morn
ing's sport, and fried bass and grouper
the delight of tiie noon repast.. As
we had both eats and dogs, why were
we not a little prepared for house
keeping?
Alter a 12 miles sail through the
pellucid waves of beautiful Sarasota,
a perfect gem of :■ small bay, wc
moored our little sea home iu the wa
ters of New Pass, about three miles
from the town of Sarasota.
Shortly after dark we caught a ten
foot shark, but in my eager inexperi
ence 1 let him escape just as wo had
him up to the boat. It was rare sport.
He made the phosphorescent waters
(lame with liquid lightning. There
were three of us at the line, and none
had a hand to spare. These man-eat
ing monsters are not pleasant bed
fellows as Dudley Fatten can testify I
from experience.
Tiie next morning was spent by Mr. <
Ed. Fatten, Mr. Kirkhoff and the
writer, graing Tarpon. Two were
grained, but on account of the defect
ive arrangement of the stall’, we only
got some of the large and beautiful
scales of these Silver King.
A certain ThcmasviUc attorney
spent llie time in fishing for catfish.
Jf there is one thing he likes, it is eat
fish. If there is anything lie likes
better, it i- more catfish. If there is
anything he likes still lioHcr, it is to
have a confiding friend walk a quar- j
ter of a mile to find out that a pigeon
is not a white crow, to half trot to
prevent the supposed closing of a draw
bridge. That same friend, whoever lie
was, became so incredulous that when
the aforesaid T. A. told him that they
had failed to procure a boat and that
quietly down to a savory meal. lie is
no glutton like a Florida ’skeeter, but
his over-politeness is often a trifle an
noying.
One ol tiie trophies of the day’s
sport was a laige stingaree grained by
Mr. Ed. Fatten, Mr. Kirkhoff assisted
in its capture. It gave'birth to eight
young stingafees before death. They
swam off as naturally ps Arthur
catches catfish. Thev seemed to enjoy
it a trifle ijetler. j ;
Friday morning just at the “peep
o’ day” 1 heard that kinddiearted un
selfish prince of clever men, Mr. Ed.
Fatten, calling us to prepare for anoth
er and farewell trial of our luck, catch
ing Tarpon. He is a cool and fearless
seaman, as gentle as a woman and a
master with the grains,
He was not long in landing two
Tarpons about live and six feet re
spectivcly in length. The climax of
our spurt was readied when a few
minutes later lie shot the barbed iron
into a large Tarpon. For one hour
we were towed for about three part of
the time at the rate of ten miles an
! hour before we captures this Silver
I King. Such sport will cause a thrill
ui lie shot through a tyro from the end
ofihe nail on his brg tos to the end
of ihe longest hair on the crown of his
head.
When it was tired out on a sand
bar, Mr. Kirkhoff anil I jumped over
board aud killed it. 1 jumped astride
of tiie beauty and had the pleasure
of riding a fish a little wav, and as I
held it Mr. Kirkhfi" killed it. It was
over seven feet long, nearly two fcc-t
across, and weighed over 200 pounds.
We took from it five gallons of eggs;
each roe measured three feet in
length and 18 inches around ;wc made
a savory menl of these.
(>ne of tiie most exhilarating effects
of our cruise was trolling on Thursday
evening. The wind was blowing
briskly and we sailed hack and forth

Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Winn leave
this morning for Manistee, Mich , to
visit their daughter, Mrs. Canfield.
The base ball fever does not seem
to have reached Tlioninsville this sea
son. Albany and Americas both
have good teams, and in Brunswick
a city league leather club is being
organized, and if Thomnsville had
local club an interesting exchange
of visits could lie arranged. A few
years ago wc had the champion team
of South Georgia.
Mr. G. I!. Whiteman leaves to-day
for his home, Latrohc Fa. He has
been sojourning “among the pines'
for many months, and we arc glad to
know that lie leaves greatly improved
lie has made hosts of friends during
his stay in ntir midst by his geniality
and cleverness, and they will welcome
his return another season, or any time
lie may chose to return.
