Mr. Carpenter and the house lie rep resents have peculiar claims on our people, and wo are«glad to know that Mr. Carpenter did a good business yesterday, ns lie always does. At the conclusion of the drill by the Guards on Wednesday night, Capt. Miller put the hoys through a competitive drill in the manual. A few sharp and tjuiclc commands, uud Ralph went out on a slight error, leaving young Fuller the victor. Rev. J. H. Herbcner visited the Connecticut Industrial .School yester day, and gave the pupils an earnest, practical talk. Mrs. Gordon not only looks after the temporal and educa tional welfare of her pupils, but she also loses no opportunity of looking after their spiritual welfare. The re marks of Mr. Ilerbener were listened to throughout with great interest by the teachers and pupils of the institu tion. Quarterly Conference. Dr. J. W. Hiuton, Presiding Elder, will hold the Second Quarterly Con ference for the Thoinasville station, on Saturday night, 7th inst., 8 p. in., at the Pastor’s study. The members of the conference will please arrange to attend the meeting. Pastor, The LeConte Pear in Texas. The Longview Record, Gregg Co., Texas, publishes a flattering notice of the thirteen acre LeConte pear orch ard belonging to Dr. J. A. Trees two feet through were killed, though not a single one of my pear trees were killed,” This is but another demonstration of the hardy character of the LeConte. It can stand more than any known fruit tree, and survive. The First Cotton Bloom. New Orleans, June 5.—The Picay une’s Greenville, Miss., special says the first cotton bloom was received yester day at the Times office, from George C. Branan, of Lake Fishington place. This is the earliest bloom received hero in twenty years. The crops throughout the country are doing splendidly.” Thomas county can discount this ; the Times Kxteki'kisi-: had blooms from two or three cotton plantations a week ago. The A. & W.
