Valdosta is a hummer, and don't you forget it. The people will hear from Foraker and Mahonc—when the census returns are published. Adam was perhaps the first man who deemed marriage a failure.—Bos ton Courier. It is said that a connecting schedule, between the Alabama Midland and the S. F. & W. Ry, will go into effect on the 15th. It was neck and neck with Quitman and Pelham on the shipment of the first car load of melons: both shipped on Thursday. According to the Milledgevillc Union and Recorder there is a piece of the mahogny coffin in which Washington was first buried, still in existence. Brother Turner, of the News nud Advertiser, acknowledges thnt the religious wave in Albany, to which he nlludctl recently, is somewhat “wobblety.” Tom Reed flatly refused to allow the democrats to offer an amendment to the silver bill in the house, on Fri day. Upon what meats hath this our Ciesnr fed, that he has grown so great? Republicans are very much mis taken when they thick the alliance movement will disrupt the democratic party at the South. One hundred jicr cent of nllinnccracn arc dyed-in- the-wool democrats. Charles Dudley Warner is respon sible for the assetion that the differ ence between the “faith cure” and the "mind cure” is that “the mind cure doesn’t require any faith, and the faith cure doesn't require any mind." “Col. Shepard is an ass,” exclaims a well-informed contemporary. In the language of the justices ot the supreme court, we concur. And in the language of the lawyer who gets left, “we appeal,” appeal from the comparison for the reason that it is a gross injustice to the ass. The great work of the Alliance has been its practical lessons in economy and business methods. It has largely placed the business of farming on a business basis. It has taught the farmers the importance of keeping books and striking a balance at the cud of the year, and if it had accomplished nothing more its work would have been worth millions ot dollars to < ieorgia.—Southern Cultivator. ready to accept the Colonel's proposi tion without a grain of salt. The farmers ot the rountty have been oppressed by hostile legislation, but, according to many of the wisest men in the party, the sub-treasury plan would not bring relief: it would rather bring confusion and prove utterly im practicable. The farmers want legis lation which will lift the load which they are carrying, but we do not be lieve the reflective, well read, well post ed farmer, can be convinced that the sub-treasury plan is the best and only plan for their relief. Thousands of their wisest and best friends, men who have for long years advocated measures tor the relief of the agricul tural classes, say the plan will not work. The trouble is, that politicians are trying to ride into place and power on this new wave, caring littie whether it works or not. Not all who advocate it lcel thus, but the country has on hand, at all times, a good stock of demagogues, and these are the men who arc trying to get office, under the plea that they are making a fight for the suns of toil. Do You Know Where It Is? Perhaps some Georgia veteran can help Adjutant-General Kell in giving information to a lady in Boston, whose letter, which explains itself,‘is given below: Boston, May 30, 1S90.—To the Adjutant-General, State of Georgia— Dear Sir: Can you give any informa tion concerning a sword captured at Chancellorsyillc from J. M. Durgin at the battle of May 3rd, 1863. It was a presentation from the ladies of Gilam- town, New Hampshire, where Mr. Durgin was lieutenant ot company B, Twelfth New Hampshire regiment, which commission he held at the time of said battle, lie was after wards informed that the sword was in possession of an officer in a Georgia regiment. There was an inscription on it which read as near as I can remember: Presented to Lieutenant J. M. Durgin by the ladies of Gilman- town. Any information on this sub ject will be most gratefully received by yours most respectfully, Harriet Hayden Durgin, Pierce Building. Conley Square, Bos ton, Mass. Thomas for Turner. There are undefined rumors afloat, to the effect that some gentleman will antagonize lion. II. G. Turner in the 2nd, at the coming election. ’Tis further intimated that the fight will be made against Turner, on account of his opposition to the sub treasury plnn. We cannot speak for other counties, hut do not hesitate to assert that Mr. Turner will carry Thomas against any man in the dis trict , always excepting a home man, aud we have heard nothing said about Thomasville putting a man in the race for congress this year. l’ut Thomas down for Turner. Yon’II Hear it Drop- The \Vich : ta, Kansas, F.rgle, which boasts of its staunch Republicanism, says of the McKinley tariff bill: “The McKinley bill is an outrageou: per formance. It is but a cheap monkey show in the face of high heaven and the American people. It is an at tempt to make an angel of the devil without abbreviating bis tail or sawing off his horns. It takes dollars from the farmers and returns them dimes. It docs not impose a single duty which will help the Kansas tarmer.” It predicts that die Republican party hear something drop A G. A. R. Color Line. Atlanta, Ga., June 5.—A special from Marietta says that the white and black grand army veterans did not work comfortably in harness on Mem orial day, when the graves of the fed eral soldiers were decorated at the National cemetery. The negroes, it | seems, were not suffered to march in j Ma line with the whites, and were at first refused admittance to the cemetery. The grand army men are reported as saying that it is their white comiadcs who are buried there, and the negroes have nothing to do with the matter. One federal veteran said he wished all the negroes in the v-outh would join the Democratic party and make it odious, and then the white people could build up a respectable Republi can party in the south. Tilden’s Will. New York, June 5.—Judge Beach to-day affirmed in the supreme court the decision of the general term in connection with the Tildeu trust. He holds that the bequest is illegal and void, and directed the executors to ac count for the entire residuary estate and to pay over to Col. George II. Tilden his portion of the property. The case will probably be appealed. L.
