Paine, yesterday, after emerging from an unusually thickly settled colored portion of the town. It was mighty hot, and the Cnpt. was perspiring freely. Rev. McK. F. McCook, who is to preach the Young Female College Commencement Sermon to-morrow, at the Methodist church, arrived yes terday. He will be the guest of Mr. S. B. Burr, on Dawson street, during his stay in the city. Mr. J. P. Beckwith, of Jackson villc, General Agent ot the Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia, AVestern and Atlantic Rail road Company, and Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah,, was in the city yesterday. Captain Paine is the busiest man in town. Business may be dull with others, hut it is lively in his line. He is finding out more about the people of Thomasville than lie ever knew be fore, though lie has lived here a long time. AVhat an addition lie would he to some sew ing society: but couldn’t he furnish them with a lot of gossip. Let’s get up a pool and guess at the population of the town. One gentle man suggests that every man put a slip with his guess written upon it, and fifty cents, in a box prepared for the purpose, and that when the pop ulation is ascertained, the party guess ing nearest take fifty per cent, ot the pool, the next thirtyper cent, and the next 20 per cent. Who will start it? Thomasville’s Weather. Elsewhere wili he found a summary of tiic weather from June 1st, 1889, to June 1st, 1890, by Mr. C. S. Bondur- ant, who has charge of the Signal Service here. It is full and will he found interesting. Mr. Boudurant lias given careful attention and much time to keeping an accurate meteoro logical record of the place. He has discharged his duties faithfully to both the government and the people here, Tho record is a most flattering one, showing that evenness of temper ature for which the place is famous. The record should be preserved. How Editors Live. “And now it is positively asserted that the blackberry crop is a failure Sorry for Triplett and Hanlon, of Thomasville and Quitman respective ly. It’s going to he a tough season with them.”—Camilla Clarion. We’re skirmishing around, finding good living among the picuiccrs just now, and later on when the big meet ings begin, there will he some fine op portunities for an editor to get a srjuarc meal. But with all these we should mourn the failure of a black berry crop. That ii one source from which a supply of “inside matter” can always he had, provided there is a crop. Ti no, when the ‘‘<iuoin” in the editors “hank” is exhausted, they fre- (jiu-ntly have to go out ill the woods aud pick on the shares, hut they get there all the same—fora “thin space” of time.
