It is not yet definitely settled whether Col. Hardeman will run for governor or not. The census man sweateth and sweareth that lie will never undertake the job again. The agricultural college professors have figured it out that two little sparrows in ten years will produce a posterity of 275,983,698 birds. Won’t some one send Tom liced a green Georgia watermelon? It would be some slight revenge to see his bald head bowed in pain, while the watermillion got in its work below. Give the country an abundance— not a super abundance—of good cur rency and a tariff which will not bear unjustly on the laboring classes, and the country will be all right. .Since gubernatorial matters have been somewhat simplified by the with drawal of Col. Livingston from the race, there is not so much dirt being pawed up by dark hor-cs. The dark horses arc growing fewer. It is announced that Phya Proph Sooiig Kuam lias started a rebellion in Chiengmai. This is, iudecd, news of a most startling character. Will the shock headed boy in the geography class please stand up—and explain. The following is a model summer advertisement clipped from a Mninc paper: “Norway, Me. Mineral spring, grand view, milk, cream, eggs, vege tables, meat, pmno, marine glass, open fire, piazza, hammocks, pine pillows, quiet home; terms, 84 per week.’’ The Sub-Treasury Plan. The Morning News, in a well written article on the allianccmen and the sub-treasury plan, says: “It is probable that a majority of the members of the alliance are now committed to what is known as the sub-treasury plan. It is not certain that they will be, however, when they have heard it thoroughly discussed and have given it careful considera tion. As yet they have heard only the arguments in favor of it. When they have heard the arguments against it, and they will hear them, doubtless, before the present earn paign for nominations for state officers and congressmen is over, they will he better able to judge whether or not it would he beneficial to them. They know, of course, that the sub- treasury plan i* not a democratic maestire. It is not a measure of any political party, it is not regarded as feasible by the leaders of any political party. It was proposed by a few leaders of the alliance, and it is under stood to he favored hv the alliance, though it is doubtful if allianccmen generally have made up their minds fully whether or not they want it. It is noticeable that some of them, since the publication of Senator Car lisle’s strong letter against it, pointing out that it would do the farmers more harm than good, have shown a dispo sition to give it furthur consideration before pronouncing for or against it. The strong arguments against it of Congressman Clements at Rome the other day have rot been without effect. The farmers arc a conservative class of people and want to do what is right. If they become satisfied that the sub- treasury plan would not relieve them of any of their burdens it will not lie possible to drag them into supporting it, nor into supporting men who advo cate it. Indeed, they would quickly abandon the men who are advocating it if they should have good grounds for suspecting that these men verc making it the means for getting into office. A Tribute to the Press. Chnuncev, M. Depew is, perhaps lb best all around talker in the country, lie made n speech the other day before the Chicago Press Club. Of course he said many bright things. We append the following tribute to the “fourth estate.” “Whatever responsibility—and it is great -may rest upon the lawyer, with the liberal latitude allowed him under his retainer, upon the preacher, with his unrestrained opportunity to spenk, upon the teacher in moulding tlie minds of his students, the largest responsibility of all rests upon the journalist. A former generation he lieved that liberty of the press would lead to such license as to endanger public morality and destroy private character. They feared that there could lie no redress from the assaults of the press except by persona! vio lence or murder. The results of a liberty far beyond that dreamed of at any former period, a liberty which is curbed by neither the law of libel nor the verdict of juries, have been found in the main entirely satisfactory. In dependence and opportunity have created a journalistic conscience by which the common view of the press protects the individual against unjust attack of any one of its members.” jL ’ s ±2 idt '!K E E P ZOOLI Thomasville Bottling j WORKS, .Mniiiifiirliii er ami Dispenser of SODA and MINERAL WATERS, carbonated with NATURAL C1AM, imported from the Mineral Springs on the Rhine. IMflRK: The St. Louis Globe-Democrat says that “Providence is kind to Alabam ians in giving them a Republican con gressman.” This is about the worst charge made against providence for some time. Providence doesn’t have any thing to do with politics—especially with republican politics. ■■ «•» — The following advertisement ap pears in a Lumkiu county paper: Wanted—A Housekeeper—age any where from twenty to thirty years. Complexion fair, dark hair and blue eyes, and of medium size, neither too large nor too small, but large enough to have all the mental and physical faculties well developed. Education preferred, more especially a domestic education—wealth no exception, poverty no objection, disposition mild agreeable and pleasuut. The furmeri of the South, under the guidance and influence of the alliance, are learning the lessons of independence. They have quit going into debt, make their own supplies, and can, most of them, snap their fingers at the middle men and specu lators. This beats depending on the government to build warehouses for them, and to lend them money, two to one. Minister—“1 think I delivered a very touching sermon to-day. Don’t vou think I moved the congregation ?” Deacon—”1 know you did. I siw a good many get up and go out.” Only After Office. The Democratic party is the party of the people, and a mistake will be made when they follow some ambi tious person who cares nothing for the masses, but is only after the office, Such a man will endorse anything in the world that he thinks will make a vote.—Adairsvillc Ledger. It was arranged that legislative nominations shall be made by primaries on Aug. 30, and that a county convention should be called to elect delegates to the state convention. The following resolution was adopted : llmiral, That the question of alii mice or non-alliance has no place within the rank of the Democratic party; that there is no divided alle giance a? between democrats aud alliance, but that all alike profess the broad principles of the Democrat ic party. — Pledger Sent Far Away. It was re ferred to the committee on privileges aud elections. Chicago is still disputing over the location of the World’s fair. If the dispute goes on much longer we bad better postpone the event until the five hundredth anniversary. They would probably agree upon a location by tlmt time; and it' such should not he the case, why Thomasville would lie big enough by that time to bold the fair and intertain the crowd.
