Brantley, Jr., of Blacksliear, ar rived, yesterday, and are "nests of t lie Stuart. Quite a number drove out to Glen Arveu, Sunday. The deer come in for a good deal of attention, especially from the ladies. Mr. Fred Lake, who has been spending several mouths here, a guest of I’ine Summit, left yesterday for his home in Chicago. He expects to return next winter. Mrs. William Hutchens, of Athens, the mother of Henry Hutchens, so well and favorably known in fliis city, is spending a few days with Mr, and Mrs. William Campbell, in Elclchcr- ville. Willis Barnes, who has been ex press messenger between this place and Montieello since the road opened, now running between here and Barnhridgc, on the Alabama Midland Express. Messrs, Alvan B. Rowe, of Bruns wick, and It. L, Colding, of Savan nah, are guests of the Stuart. Mr. Colding, who it will he remembered was here Veteran’s Day, with the Clmtlmm Artillery, has a number of friends here. The young gentlemen arc frequent visitors to Tlmmnsvillo, and it is rumored that there is a plea sant inducement for their doing so. The Alabama Midland. The opening of the Alabama Mid land from Bninhridgc to Montgomery, opens up a new and direct route from this section to all points west. The Midland is making a specialty ot melon shipments, and it is in condi tion to make particularly fast time To illustrate: In twenty-fours after a car left Metcalfe it was whirling away over the T,. A X., beyond Mont gomery, to its destination, Chicago. The Midlund proposes, further, to run one or more ears on passenger train schedules when shippers desire to make specially fast time for any particular reason. The regular schedule time to Chi cago over the Midland is70 hours, to Cincinnati (IN hours, and eorres- dponingly fastjtime to other points of like distance. Mr. W. 8. Gates, the popular and clever traveling agent of the Midland is on the line, and he is n hustler, and as clever, withal, as he is active 'Police Court. Mayor pro-tern, Patten, did the honors in the police court yesterday morning. Jack Woodson, who has paid in enough lines in the past year to almost pay an extra policeman to keep up with him, was fined 8"> and costs, not withstanding the efforts of his witness es to get him out of the scrape. Mag Fort and Boh Smith were wit nesses against each ottlier. Mag was fined the costs, and SmithVcase was continued until Friday on account of the absence of witnesses. After the cases had been disposed of, a Turk came forward, and on bended knee, prayed in broken Eng ine, that he he allowed to give a hear show in the city. He told a pitiful tale, if true, of a sick wife unable to go farther, and five hungry diildrcn. He said that their horse had died, ami they were compelled to tramp from one place to another. But the city ordinance prohibits beggars and hears, and he was ordered to move on. They arc at present camped i n a swamp on the Jones bridge road. . B. M. H. Died. Mr. Jcese A liolles, of Charleston, S. C., died at the residence of iiis brother-in-law, I’. M. Vandyke, in this city, Sunday morning, after a lingering illness. Hu was in !iis !>.‘!d year. Mr. Bolles possessed many of die good qualities most admired in men, and his many friends lament Iiis death. The remains, accompanied by Mr. Vandyke, were taken to Sunday for interment.
