Melon Movements.
Melons arc beginning to move freely
and by another week the campaign
will have opened in good earnest. It
is now predicted that the yield on Hie
line of the S. F. & W. Ky., especially
at the older shipping points, will ho
short, though as the same cry has been
heard so often lie fore, it is too early to
make anything like a close estimate.
Friccs so far have held up well, partly
because the weather has been favora
ble, and partly because shipments to
any one point, have not been heavy
enough to affect disastrously tlic mar
kets. It is usually smooth sailing till
the hulk of the crop comes on, and
then comes the collapse. If, however,
the Melon Growers Association and
I he Exchange work harmoniously, aud
arc properly supported by the grow
ers, prices may lie held up.
If Not, Why Not.
The TiMiLs-K.vrKnrnisr: has several
times spoken incidentally of the
early closing movement being made
a part of the summer programme in
our city. The matter has not been
rushed Into as enthusiastically as we
could have wished, and we dare say
the clerks of the city would echo the
same thought. But seriously, this
,’uatter ought to engage the attention
of our merchants. There is really
no ri'ason our stores cannot close at
1; o’clock every afternoon, except Sat
urday, till next August or September.
The recreation that, merchants and
clerks could secure thereby, would
be both pleasant and profitable. We
believe we can .-peak for the ladies
of the city that they will so arrange
their shopping that the early closing
will not inconvenience them. Think
about this matter, merchants, and we
believe you will decide to close at fl
and allow tin: clerks to get a little
rest.
County Court.
In the county court yesterday
morning, Silvia Jones, a colored
woman who lives near Boston plead
guilty to assault aud battery. Her
offense was making an unprovoked
assault on a white woman. She was
lined S-10 and casts, or nine months
by Judge Mitchell.
A gentleman in Alexandria, Iv
gypt, offers to sell to the directors of
the World’s Fair in Chicago for
§00,000 a sarcophagus containing the
dust of Cleopatra. This wouldn’t
bo exorbitant perhaps for a genuine
live “Sorceress of tiie Nile,” but is
pretty steep, says the Augusta Chron
icle, fora handtul of dust, in a weatli-
beaten eotlincr.
