Mn", for the suhse- 20 00 There is some hope that the federal election law may be defeated in the Senate. Russia is building a railway through Sibeiia. It will be seven thousand miles long. The American people are toning down : Only three hasc hall umpires were mobbed last week. Senator Wolcott, of Colorado, woke up in Washington, on Wednesday morning to find himself famous. That silver speech did Ihc work. Northeu and Hardeman will cross swords for the first time at Lawren Se ville to-day. Northen is earnest, log ical and convincing; Hardeman is magnetic, eloquent and popular. Chicago is kicking, in advance, about her population. It will be re membered that Chicago took in sever al large contiguous, prairies, with their cow boys and Indians, sometime ago. Let Democracy be the watchword of all our politics to-day. The cen tury has not produced a party that means as much to the rank and file of the people. It is the friend of all. —Tribune of Rome. The Georgia School of Technology. The fir.-,; public exhibition ol the work of the students of the Georgia Sehoo! of Technology was a decided success. During the hours, y.sterday morn ing, when the school was open to vis itors, many people availed themselves of the opportunity to get some insight into the wotk being done out there. It Is no exaggeration to say that nine out of ten of tiic people who went through, the • chool were sutprised at what they saw. With.out any Drag or bluster the School of Technology has , been rapidly pushed forward to the i accomplishment of the work for which it is designed, and the results must be I most gratifying to those in charge, j The visitors who, before they went, knew nothing of the school, had good cause for astonishment at til: results ] accomplished in tins first year. And they did not hesitate ,lo express both their astonishment and gratification at what they saw.—Constitution. Th s school should be patronized by every county in the state. It turns out both scholars and mechanics. The south is entering upon a wonder ful era of development, i rain her sons to take part in the work. And to do tin’s, the hand as well as the head must be educated. Georgia never did a wiser thing tiian when she established a Technological school.* The University Drops the Branches This Year. Ati.anta, La., June 18.— The board of trustees of the Slate Univcr sity closed their, work to day by reergan izing the university on a new plan. Dr, lfoggs was re-elected chancellor, Dr. White president of the state agticuf turn! college, auu Dr. Charbonnicr dean of the faculty of arts. Charles M. Strahan was elected full professor ofengineeting and Mr. Hooper of Virginia adjunct professor of ancient languages, 'flic chair of ancient lan guages is now named the Milledgc, pro fessorship, after Gov, Milledgc, the first benefactor of the university. The board was unable to appropriate money to the branch, colleges this year, except $a,ooo to Dahlonega by contract. ’Tis said that Mr. Hayes—who once claimed to be president—has grown rich raising chickens. Rutherford's success would have been limited, had he planted his chicken farm in some sections of the south. Charleston ups and says that her census has been taken “loosely.” Loosely is a good word ; it will doubt less be used by other cities whose pop ulation is not what their fancy had painted it. Thirty-five poor miners, lost in a terrible accident near Dunbar, I’a., have not been recovered. They arc several hundred yards from the sur face. The mine is on fire preventing the rescuing party from reaching their comrades, who are all undoubt edly dead. City Marshal Wiggins, of Jackson ville, Fla., made a most murderous assault on Mayor McQuaid, of that city, a day or two since. He decoyed the mayor into a back street and hit him several heavy blows on the head. The Mayor’s condition is serious. Wiggins mounted a horse and made his escape. It is very rare that we have and op portunity to say a good word for Ingalls. He is so infernally mean, on almost all occasions, that a rift or a break in his unenviable record, is hailed with pleasure, llis latest good action is his refusal to enforce Reed's gag rules in the Senate. And this may defeat the federal election law bill in that body. < )ue of the most pleasing and grat ifying incidents connected with the passage of the free coinage silver hill through the Senate, on Tuesday, was the squelching of little Hilly Chan dler. William offered an amendment nnd asked the hotly to adopt it. A number of republicans joined with the democrats, and they sent Chan dler's amendment skyward. President Harrisoh intimates, in yes terday’s dispatches, that lie does not want a second term. There is not much danger ol a second term being forced upon him, or a first term on any other member of the g. o. p. if public indignation on the rascalities of the republican party, is any indica tion of the result in 1892. t A Duchess Renounces a Throne. Vienna, June 17.—The Arch duchess Varlcrie yesterday renounced all her lights to the Austrian throne, in order flint she might marry as she chose. Her renunciation was made in the presence of the emperor, mem bers of the court, Count Kalnoxy and the archbishop of Vicuna. Sensible woman. She will be far happier as the wife of the mail she loves, though they may not live in a palace, than she would lie, with the weight of ;i crown resting on her brow, while her hand had been given where the heart could not follow. Important News from Washington. A deeply interesting piece of news was wired from the White House, the other day: “Ihtby McKee is actually teething, think of it: and the little teeth arc just too lovely for any* thing”; hut this is enough of the dis patch to give the reader an idea of the balance. The dispatch was sub sequently cabled abroad to our min isters with instructions to lay the in formation, promptly, before their respective courts. A Pair of Opinions. From the Huston Traveler. Emperor William thinks Ihsmirck has passed the age of usefulness, and ltismarck has grave doubts whether Emperor William wili ever reach that age. ‘‘What, haven’t you been to bed 1 '? said Mrs. as she saw her husband poring over a document in the early morning light. “Il-u-s-h,” said the husband, as with blood shot eyes and corrugated brow, lie bent lower over the paper in front of him. “What on earth are yon studying,”? the wife asked alarmed by the wild' ami haggard look of the man. I have just finished one of Mr. Evarls sentences on the silver bill, and am now trying to settle the question whether lie was for or against the hill. Harrison will elevate his boot heels on the “bannisters’’ of Mrs. It's new cottage it ('ape May, and complacent ly gaze at the deep, rolling sea, just the same as if he had bought and paid for the property. The fact that fie is expected to reward the donor with a (at office, will not disturb the pious (low of holy thoughts, lirn. Wana- maker wili please lead in prayer, in voking the divine blessing upon the overworked republican president. The Ass who Predicted. From tilt- Detroit Free Fri-ss. An Ass who heard a Goose observe that the Water on the l’ond was get ting very Low, at once otfeied his Services to Predict Katn. This having been Noised about, the Hens asked for continued Dry Weather, the Eoxcs demanded a mow storm, the Oxen wanted frost.- mornings, and the Mule, the Wolf, the Dog and the 1’eacock each demanded that lie be Eavoted with Weather made to order. As a result the Ass could l’lcase no one, and as his failure was charged to his Obstinacy, and the Whole Crowd fell upon him and Wounded him almost to Death. He was Complaining of this to the Peasant, When the latter Re plied : He who seeks to please all will end j in pleasing nobody at all. Doing the Honors. Amcricus entertained the members of the Alabama Press Association yesterday and last night. The pro gramme embraced a banquet to which editors can always do justice. The Pimes-Exteki’kise acknowledges cordial invitation to be present, and regrets that it was impossible to have a representative at the table. Geo. W.
