The population of New York is 1,- 015,303, according to the estimate of the health department for last week. The population of Brooklyn is esti mated at about 850,000, so that to gether the two great towns have about 2,500,000 inhabitants. The Sun thinks the actual enumeration now going on will probably show a result only slightly different. Even the boot blacks sneer at the Harrison administration in IV ashing- ton. ’Tis said your Uncle Jerry Busk surprised one of these gamins, with such a sneer on his lips the other day, and that, then and there, your Uncle Jerry pulled a paling from the white house garden fence, and wore the moke into smitheteens. The chief of the Agricultural Dep’t, is a bad one, when he starts in. I.ouisiana would do well to wait sometime yet perhaps, before char tering her lottery to the highest bid der. The present owners of the con cern have offered a round million a}) car, tor twenty five years, to be allowed to run for that period. And l.ow comes an English party who offers a million and a quaiter per annum, for the privi lege of running twenty five years. And tae public is looking on, wait ing to be guzzled out of their money again. Ilainhill Larsen is the most infan tile immigrant that ever came to this country without a natural protector. She is 2 yeats and 1 month old and landed at New York the other day. She came alone all the way from Stockholm, Sweden. She is an or phan, and was sent for by her aunt, who lives in Newark, N. J. At Stock holm she was placed in charge of the stewardess of a steamer bound for Hull, Kngland. At Hull a railroad conductor took charge of her aud saw her safely on a steamer at Liverpool. The steamer was the Britannic, the stewardess of which vessel looked af ter her until she reached New ^ ork, where her aunt received her. Rivals After The Lottery. When the House met Thursday the speaker received from Isadore Newman, president of the New Orleans Stock Exchange, a prop osition from Benjamin Newgass of London, England, offering 81,250,- 000 yearly for the same lottery privi leges applied for by John A. Morris, with an additional tender olsecurity for the payment of the amount annu ally to the state. A New Road to the South. Chicago, Juue 18.—The Evening Journal says that Chicago is to have a new railroad connecting it with the heart of the new touth. At present the plan is to build only as far as Bir mingham, Ala. The connctions thus made will open up a vast field to Chicago for business which has hither to been unproductive, owing to lack of railroad facilities and the discrimi nating tariff ol northern and southern lines against Chicago and in favor ol New York. The new route will! lie in direct competition, the Journal sajs, with the Chicago and Eastern Illinois and Illinois Central railroad, and to a less degree to the Louisville, New Al bany and Chicago. It will run through the middle of the coal fields, of (which the Eastern Illinois road has hitherto had a monopoly, and will in all respects be the most direct route to the iron re gions of Alabama. ; Judge Twiggs and Col. Watson Ex change Correspondence- | Correspondence lias posted between T. I E. Watson and Judge H. D. D. Twiggs | about Mr. Wats-mV card in reply to ! Judge Twiggs' speech at Waynesboro. ! It has proceeded no further than a demand for a retraction of the lan guage used in Mr. Watson's card, ami a refusal by Mr. Watson to it- | tract it until Judge Twiggs shall re | tract the language used about Mr. j Watson in his Waynesboro speech. ! One report says Judge Twiggs' let- j ter is in ti e nature ol a challenge to light a dul l, and that Mr. Watson Isays he is no duelist, hut will defend himself. Mr. Watson lives in Thom son, Imt is now in Augusta, Judge j Twiggs lives in Augusta. George McCormick in the Ring. Everyone remembers George Mc Cormick. < >f course they do. Well, George is in Kentucky, and has announced himself as a candidate to represent his county in the constitu tional convention called in that state. And George has issued an address. It appears in the .Sentinel-Democrat. We reproduce it as a novel election eering document. Under the head of “Miss Taught.” Mr. McCormick proceeds thusly: ‘‘Little children, we grown up peo ple have learned a great deal more ot some things than we have of others. We have learned enough of Alite Take* and Mister Takes to make the grown up portion of us a much troubled and a very unhappy people. And now our dear little friends, I, as one of the troubled people appeal to you for help, aud m helping us you will help yourselves. So in order to be safe I will begin with you “IN TIIE BE GINNING.” In this matter of be ginning you had no choice of whether to be or not he, but you did be, nnd “of sun'll is the Kingdom of Heaven”; and now alter thousands of years of butchery by wars, killing by the guil lotine, hanging by the neck, throw- babies into the mouths of alligators, banishing infants into the poison of unnatural nourishment, sickness and death ; nearly all of which has been enforced by bin* of State, bur* of church and bun of cold cruel and unhappy society, in which we all agonize and suffer, is it any wonder wc appeal to the real honest sunshine of your natures for This age of th/w.i-'W.®. - CHRISTIAN, and Christ said chil dren were his highest type of human righteousness. Therefore please let me ask you all, and each of you, to get from your parent, guardian or teach er, one single word, line or sentence in the whole life <</ ('held in which lie sanctioned the human notion of kil ling any of God’s children, big or lit tic, old or young, good nr bad, by the decrees of HI MAN LAW. They will show you where lie appealed to hie God to let one, bleating cross, DEATH SCENE puss, but to show you where he endorsed thrusting of swords or spears into the flesh of the children of mothers, or choking the Heaven born breath of life from one of God’s souls. .NEVER!!! Cer tainly wo have been inidamjht. I will be around over this new Constitution district to see most of the children before the August election and will try to give some good reasons for ask ing all the children to assist me in my obtaining a seat of legal member of the framers of the new Kentucky Constitution; so hoping to fnd you all ready to help me to a place where I can do you aud your fathers aud mothers and neighbots some good, I will subscribe myself as ever (poor aud weak), yet in REAL EARNEST, your friend.
