WHERE WILL THIS STOP?
Getting on Dangerous Ground.
The following appeared in Sunday
niorning’s New s:
LAWREXCEVil.ut, Ga.—June 21.—
The primary to-day was ordered by
the ailiance. Democrats outside re
fused to vote in it. The county on a
fuil vote polls 3600. Less than one
third of the votes were cast
to day. This is about the strength of
the alliance, The voters were all
mustered to the polls at the secret
meeting and not more than too men
outside of the order voted in the pri
mary. Under instructions from their
leaders the alliancemcn voted solidly
for Northern Peek and Deck, state
Iccfufer. and the county officers rode
the county day and night. There was
no organization of the democrats.
The voting, except one small precinct,
resulted as follows:
Northen
Hardeman |(j: '
Henderson for commisioncr and
Wyon for congress carry the county.
President and Premier.
Washington. June 22.—President
Harrison is very anxious to have it
understood that he is not opposed to
lhe McKinley bill. He has taken
p ; ains to assure Mr. McKinley himself
that this is the case. He is also anx
ious to have it understood that he is
not in favor of Secretary Blaine’s re
ciprocity policy. In transmitting Sec
retary Blaine’s report on the pan-
American conference reciprocity reco-
ommendation on Friday, President
' Harrison was very careful not to say
anything commending Secretary
Blaine’s policy. President Harrison
explained that he sent in lhe Blaine
report because it was one ot the results
of the pan-American conference, a
report on that subject being contem
plated by the act providing for the
conference.
Tin President secs that Secretary
Blaine’s course leads toward greater
freedom of trade and away from pro
hibitory tariff, and he thinks it is in so
far more democratic than republican.
Then, too, his dread ot being thought
to bs in any way controlled by Secre
tary Blaine’s opinions make him anx
ious to have his difference with Secre
tary Blaine on the tariff question em
phasized. Secretary Blaine stands by
his opposition to the sugar and wool
schedules of the McKinley bill as ex
pressed in recently published . letters
because they prevent reciprocity with
South America.
Blaine rises immeasurably above
Harrison, as a statesman. Harrison is
built to close to the ground, for a big
question.
Have you been “ccusused ?” is the
way they put it now.
Bctwcn the grass and Cnndidato
the farmers are kept pretty busy these
days.
The Augusta encampment was 11
big success. The boys learned some
thing of soldier life, sure enough.
They caught Reed stealing a bill in
the bouse the other day. it was the
silver bill. And the house made him
put it hack.
The people are not worrying about
Harrison. He is too little, and fre
quently too mean, to attract the atten
tion of men above mediocrity. After
his term is out, he will join Hayes on
his chicken farm, and these ‘‘nobodvs”
will pass out of history forever,
And now George AVilliam Curtis,
in an nddress at Vassar, says :
“About aixty years ago public opin
ion had so far advanced that Oberlin
College in Ohio was chartered in
and apparently the first collc-
gijjlodiplowa grafted to a woman in
tiiis country was at Olicrlin in 18138.”
Wc have always thought that
Wesleyan Female College was the
first organized and recognized exclu
sively female college ever chartered.
