They Downed Reed
1 hey downed Reed in the house
lor the first time on Thursday,
took the authority (he is always doing
that) to refer the Senate silver bill to
the committee on coinage, weights
and measures. Mills of Texas and
Springer of Illinois, both went in, and
they made it hot for Reed. McKinley,
the tariff tinker tried to rescue Reed
by moving the approval of the Journal,
Mills and Springet claimed to be
he»rd. Reed ignored them. Mr,
* Springer said:
‘■You can ignore the rights of the
Representatives of the people, but
the people will put you down at the
polls next November and your party
with yon.”
But the cream of the fracas was
i■ when the vote was announced on the
approval of the journal. Enough
silver men among the republicans join
ed the democrats and the house refus
ed to endorse Reed’s arbitrary action
by a vote ol toO to liy. Reed was
livid with rage. There may be some
chance that lie will burst a blood ves
sel one of these days.
An Eminent Young Georgian.
I’at Calhoun of Atlanta, though but
■L years ol age, is general counsel
for the great Richmond Terminal sys
tem, which stretches over 8,000 miles
of road. He was strongly talked of
j" or president of the system. Mr. Cal-
hpon is a grandson of John C. Cal
houn, and of Gen. Duff Green, who
figured in Washington journalism
during President Jackson’s adminis
tration. Both his ancestors were re
markable men, and young Calhoun
has the characteristics ol both. His
advance has been extraordinary. Ten
years ago he was poor and just begin
ning his law practice. To day he is a
lawyer and a railroad attorney of the
first rauk, and wealthy, with a creative
business capacity of the highest order.
