Baltimore, June 23.—The census enumerators have concluded their work in this city. The population is 432,095, against 332,190 in 1880. The president threatens to veto the river and harbor bill, unless some of the amounts are reduced. The bill appropriates something over twenty- five millions. craze, when thousands and thousands who had been coming to the south went to southern California, many people thought the bottom had drop- pc;l out down here, lint the “bottom dropped out” act has not been per formed down here: b"t it has been ; performed beyond the great range. *r> 00 j California is a good country; this is a , belli rone. It requires almost a week to land out tl’.ne ; here you are put down at your destination within a few hours. The News speaking of the tide of j travel says : The newspapersof the Pacific coast are •lamenting the decrease in trans continental travel and the falling off in immigration to that section of the country. During the first quarter ef this year the arrivals at San Francisco were only 14,5821 against 24,719 last year. "This may in part be account ed for by the snow blockade on the Sierra, but April and May, when the snow blockade was a thing of the past, also show a falling off, and for this it is difficult to assign a reason,” says the San Francisco ('all. There is reason, notwithstanding the Call unable or unwilling to give it. The tendency of immigration is toward the south. There are no figuresjat hand, but it is safe to say that two-thirds of the investors, capitalists and home- seekers, who have studied the advan tages of both localities arc attracted in this direction, where they find bet ter opportunities for improvement and increasing their capital. The saying ot Bishop Berkely is reversed now, and instead of westward, it is “south ward rhe course ol empire takes its way.” Brunswick had a negro riot on Mon day evening. A big colored excursion was at the bottom of the trouble. \ number of shots were fired, but the police final!, cleaned out the colored contingent. The republicans of Georgia, are talking, so it is said, about nominat ing Longstreet or McLaws for govern or, Neither one of the gentlemen mentioned £would accept nomination from such a source. The republicans are ready to "loot every dollar in the treasury ; to turn the keys over to the pension shark and jobbers, to squander the millions a itli a reckless hand, provided, they are to be retained in power. Pear growers are happy, in that the crop promises well, both as to quality and prices. The outlook for corn, cotton and other field products is promising The price of cotton is up and bagging is dewn. The people ought to be happy.—Southwest Georgian. Savannah, like a good many other cities, has lowered her estimates on population. The News now estimates that 45,000, will probably be about the number. It would have been almost an insult, twelve months ago to have told a Savannah man that the population of the city was not more than 45,000. Ingalls got upon his hind legs the Senate, yesterday, and demanded unlimited pensions for everybody. He said it did not make any difference what it cost the country. Ingalls like every other demagogue in the republi can party, is bidding for the soldier vote. These blood suckers and treach erous leeches would bleed the very life blood out of the country to get return ed to place and power again, and where they can carry on their stealing. DEMOCRATIC MASS MEETING. A mass meeting of the voters of the Democratic party of Thomas county, is called to meet at the court bouse in Thomusville, on Saturday, July 12th, at 11 a. m. The meeting will have to elect a new executive committee, nud to settle the method by which members to the legislative and dele gate* to the gubernatorial, congrea- sional and senatorial conventions shall be chosen. Americas, Ga., June 21—The Georgia Press Association, through its president yesterday presented to its retiring treasurer, Mr. 8. D. Weston, of Albany, Gn., a magnificent gold headed cane. It was sent by express, and was a complete surprise to its recipient. Mr. Weston in acknowled ging its receipt, says: “God bless the Georgia press, and make them to ever stand as they have in the past bravely battling for the rights of the people of Georgia and the United States. Many thinks, and best wishes for each and every one.”—Koine Triuuuc. Steve Weston has a warm place in the heart of every member of the Georgia press. Faithful, true as steel, always on hand, ever ready to please and accommodate, Steve has, long since, won the best wishes of every member of the Georgia press associa tion. It Has Passed Speaking ol the great pension steal just passed by the Senate, the Wash ington correspondent of the Constitu tion, says : The pension bill has passed the senate this afternoon, and which is now ready for the president's signature, provides for the pensioning of all de pendent soldiers who served lor three months or more in the union army. It is estimated, from careful calcula tions, that it will take $75,000,000 out of - the treasury the first year, and $100,000,000 the second year. In other words it will increase the pension rolls to something between two hun dred and fifty million annually, which 875,000,000 will have to be paid by the people of the south, who get noth ing in return. This is simply public plunder. "Stand and deliver” is the motto of the highwayman. Chauncey M- Depew's Latest. I found the southern people very interestsng. The negroes are much more entertaining than I expected to find them. You know in the north we rarely, if ever, see the real darky ragged, lazy and happy, as h» is nat urally. I overheard the coiversalion between an old “aunty” and her daughter that will amuse you, I know. Here it is : “I/za Jane, hev yo’ druv up all them chiehen yit ?" “Yaas, ma.” "Yo’ sho’ you druv ’em all up ?” “Yaas, ma.” “How many wus dcrc, IJza Jane V' "One.” “Right, I.iza Jane. ’ A Church Struck by Lightning- Canton, O., June 23.—During a Sunday school at Sugar Creek, Sutart county, a Methodist church was struck by lightning and nearly burned.
