S. Nor ton, agent for the melon exchange at Boston. Snid Mr. Norton : ‘•The exchange has been very un justly and unwisely criticised by those claiming to he the friends of the melon growers. The exchange has scatted tens of tliousa nds of dollars throughout the country with a lavish band, ranking good every promise, besides enabling even its enemies to realize handsome pricer for their melons. The exchange agreed to pay 875 per enr lor all melons deJivered in June, and 50 per c»:t. additional in advance to make good its offer on latter part of the crop. For all melons delivered in first fifteen days of July 860 per car, and for all after wards 850 per car. WHEN IT WII.I, HE IX. “Two-thirds of the crop will be gathered in Juno and will net the growers 875 per car, besides the 837 50 advanced on ea ch car for later deliveries. The whole crop will be in by July 15. I liaveco ntrollcd almost every shipment from nnd near Boston for the exchange, nnd have cheerfully and promptly paid 8112 50 for each car,as it was turned ove r to mo on the tracks. The exchange has unques tionably been a great h.'cssing to the melon growers, nnd all the talk about its breaking is the idlest bosh, started and kept going by its avowed and secret enemies. It has already re ceived half, and paid tor two-thirds of the crop. How, then, can it fail?” CAUSE OK THE TltOCItl.K. “What is the greatest obstacle to the indefinite extension of the melon growing business?" was asked MrJ Norton, who himself has planted mel ons for the market for ye irs. ‘Well,’ said lie, “the trouble lies in some mys terious exhaustion of the soil by this crop. As n rule, you can’t make melons on the same land successfully, but once in seven years. True, some land in rare instances will make two and possibly three successive crops, and then it is exhausted. Ho the melon center shifts yearly. It used to bo Ousley, then Valdosta, then Boston mid Quitman. Now it is I’cl- ham nnd the younger shipping points.. Boston is losing ground yearly.” Mr. Norton was asked if it ever had occurred to him as rather strange that the farmers around Thomasville, which was in the very heart of the melon territory, have paid si little at tention to their culture, and if he knew the reason for it. “Yes, it is passing strange. The fault is not in your soil or your opportunities. It is in your people. They either don’t know how to rail ,e melons and don’t care to learn, or they arc blind to their opportunities. They are sleep ing over one of the best crops possible to the .South Georgia farmer.” A very large crowd will he in the city to attend the festivities of the Hussars on July 4th. Arrangements will be made to servo dinner to every one for n modest sum, the proceeds are going to the Hussars fund. Let everybody help in this worthy cause. The ladies, as usnol, are acting nobly. Assist them cheerfully, aud it will be appreciated by the members of the corps. J. M. Henry, of Monticcllo, was in the city yesterday. * 1 * Sign, of the BIGr BOOT.
