AI.BKBT WIWTEK, Bna. linn. Atlanta’s population is fixed. It is 6s 2oo. They have been cla ming So,ooo. Dr. Willis F. Westmoreland, one of the most distinguished surgeons in the stale, died at Milledgevillc, on Fri day. Anotner sister state: Wyoming by bill passed in the Senate yesterday, was admitted to the sisterhoood of states. A seven story building collapsed in Knoxville, Tenn., yesterday. Loss on building $50,000. A stock of goods worth $200,000 was in the building, Nobody. On account of illness Col. Harde man was not able to meet Col. North en at] Newnao, on Thursday. North cn declined to take advantage of his adversary’s absence and did not speak himself. Atlanta still has a dark horse or two grazing in convenient pastures. It would not be surprising to see one of them bob up in the 5th congression al district convention, avd attempt to tea'. Liv:ng«ton and Stewart both. We will forgive any dark horse if he will aid in downing Livingston. Dr. Lyman Abbott, Beecher’s suc cessor iu Blymoth pulpit, does not be lieve in tho Puritanical idea of the Sabbath. He preaches in favor of the opening of art galleries, libraries and parks on the day of rest, and says that in many cases it will do a man more good to go into the country on Sunday than to go to church.—Ex. We flatter ourselves that we arc ahead of our British cousins in most things, but they can give us points ou census taking. Tho census of Loudon is taken by the police botwen the hours of 11 and 12 at night. At that time nearly the entire population, ex cept the police, is under roof, though not always athome. People are coun ted, no matter where found, and nrc cautioned under heavy penalties not to be counted again. The census of London is said to be more complete and more'nccurate than tlint of any other city in the world.—Telgrapli. If reports be true the present census will be the greatest fraud of the age. In some sections they have not had a full count and in others the thing has been overdone. In Minneapolis it is claimed that twenty-five thousand fic titious names were returned, that when they ran short, of names they went to the grave yards and got them from the tomb stones; that four thou sand names of men who had applied for work at one of the factories dur ing a period ofsix months were taken and returned by the census men, and that the dens of tramps were visited und their aliases taken down and re turned.—Ex. — • •* » Prostrated By The Heat- St. Loris, June 26.—I'p to 6 o’clock this afternoon nine deaths and sixteen prostrations, some of them serious, had been caused by the heat. FIVE DEATHS AT CHICAGO. Chicago, June 26.—The heat iu this city yesterday and lost night was very oppressive and five deaths from sunstroke nrc reported. Over twenty other people were prostrated but, it is 1 ttfll recover. New Industries Springing upJEvery- where- Chattanooga. Tenn., June 26 — The Tradesman reports for the second quarter of 1S90 the organization ot i,493 enterprises 111 the southern states, against 690 111 the correspond ing quarter of 18S9 and 716 in the corresponding quarter ol 1888. I hese reports arc compiled from carefully prepared reports sent the Tradesman from accurate sources from every point in the southern states During the quarter just ending, three agricultural implement factories were established, five barrel factories and five breweries. Fort)-one brick works were commerced against eigh'cen in the same quarter last year, and one new bridge eorks was established in Kentucky. Six boot and shoe fac tories were established, and ten car works, five in Alabama, three in Geor gia and two in South Carolina. The disposition of the so ith to utilize small fruits evidenced by the es tablishment ol fifty-six canning factories thirteen in Georgia, ten in Florida, nine in South Catolina and the bal ance equally distributed in the South, Nine new cigar and tobacco factories were darted. The textile industries received their shaie of attention, a total ofsixty-siv having been organized during tbiec months, twenty of whieh were organized in Georgia, nine in Alabama, nine in L’exas, seven in Louisiana and six in South Carolina. Twelve new cotton compresses com panies were formed and six new dis tilleries organized, four in the state of North Carolina. Forty-nine electric light works were formed, and fifty-one flour and grist mills. Seventy found ries were organized, Alabama leading with twenty. One hundred and seven mining companies were formed, Forty-seven new oil mills were established, against sixteen in the corresponding quarter last year, twelve of which were in Georgia, eleven in South Carolina, nine in Texas, and five in West Vir ginia. One hundred and seventy-eight new railroad corporations organized. All of these of course will not be built, but the fact that the companies were formed is a substantial proof pfthe interest in that direction. Nine roll ing mills were established in the south, and twelve stamp mills, and smelters. Fifty-five new street railway companies were formed in the quarter and fifty- two new water-works, and in addition 225 wood working establishments and 225 miscellanous establishments. In Dixie’s land we’ll take our stand to live and work for Dixie. O, but the south is coming. No mistake about it. THE.MERCURY JUMPS. Hot, Hotter, Hottest. Dealing out Deaths. Congressman Connell Caps the Cli max of Pension Insanity. Washington, June 27.—Congress man Connell of Nebraska has allowed himself to be made the medium of in troducing to the House the most astonishing pension scheme yet pro posed. It is entitled; ‘A bill to provide pensions for freedmen.” It provides that all negroes emancipated by the government shall be pensioned on the bounty of the United States. All under the age of 50 shall receive $4 a month; all of 50 years or over shall have a pension of $S and bounty of $100; all of 60 years and over, a pension ol $12 and $300 bounty, and all of 70 years and over a pension ol $12 and $500 bounty In view of this and othes similar pension legislation ; the question of the surplus, which Cleveland left in the treasury, disappears like the mists before the morning’s sun. Bancroft Very Feeble. New Port, R. I„ June 26.—George Uancroft, the venerable historian, is very feeble, and no one outside of the family is allowed to see him. It is feared that he will not recover. Rot. The last issue of the Southern Alliance Farmer, says: “Compare the silly letter ot Carlisle on the sub-treasury bill with the great SDeech of President Livingston before tnc ways and r. ?ans committee, and you have the idle vaporings of an im becile in comparison with the utter ances of a statesman.’’ What presumption ! Think of com paring Livingston with John G. Car lisle, one ol the broadest and deepest thinkers of the day. Mr.' Carlisle ranks with the foremost statesmen in this country, or in Europe. Living ston’s fame rests on his efforts to array one class of people against another, to the end that he, Livingston, might get office. This “silly” letter referred to by Mr. Carlisle is profound in its wisdom, broad as the country and breathes a lofty spirit of patriotism, throughont, while Livingston was that of a demagogue. It is an insult to the democratic party, to the south and the entire country, to apply the terms: “idle vaporings of an imbecile,” to John G. Carlisle. The climax is reached, how ever, inreferridg to Livingston’s speech 'utterances of a statesman.” GOIILIXGJIORST, SHIILEY & CO. WHOLESALE FRUIT and PRODUCE Commission Merchants, 520 K.
