H. WOLFF & BRO. Will This Do. “The Thomasville Times-Entcrprise is fighting the watermelon Exchange, and the principal objection advanced is, that, some of the roads and some of the commission men feel that they have been unfi.irlv treated. We hadn’t though of it, but it is a splen did reason why the growers should nhandou the Dxci'inngo! It is too bad to wound the feelings of those poor railroads, ami those innocent commission m.en—too bad! Next we will hear that the lordly melon growers are robbing the railroads and the commission — men.”—Valdosta | Times. The Valdosta Times is in error, :nay it please the .court. We submit to an enlightened public, that it does not—will not— promote the success ot the melon exchange, we call it syndicate, for it is no.'Jiing more nor iess. tv antagonize railroads or com mission houses. The growers depend more on competition among railroads, for promptness and lo w rates, for i -'ifit, than any other one cause. Why then should five cut of six of the Toads that are bidding for the business be shut out? Caa/iot even the wise Valdosta Times soe at a glance that the effect of such shutting out will .be to drive these five roads out of the territory, and then the growers lose will the benefit of compe tition ? Tnko the Mouou Route, Iron) Lou isville and Cincinnati to Chicago as an illustration. This is the ouly route outside of the North ot the Ohio river that has thought enough of.South Georgia to make any effort to get its business, or that has shown any re gard for the interest or convenience of shippers, and yet it has been cut off from the carrying of melons. Mr. R. W. Gladding its courteous and energetic agent has made a friend out of every shipper over the Mouou, and yet ho must staud on the outside. Take the Alabama Midlaud ns an other case in point. If there bo any line that promises better things for South Georgia shippers, we fail to re member it, and yet the Midland is cut off. Take commission houses on the the shipments to any particular mar ket among the reliabel men that have the trade ? Cannot even the erudite Valdosta Times sec that to place the melons in any one of the big cities in the hands of one or two 'men, will be to antagonize every other dealer in that market, and that instead of working to keep up the market, these dissatis fied men will work to break it down ? The Times-Enierkuse is not fight ing the melon exchange, but it is not in condition to swallow the mistakes it has made. It looks beyond the present season, and it understands that if any mishaps should come to the exchange, and that if compe titive roads, and reliable houses are antagonized, that the business another season will be in infinitely worse shape than it was before the exchange was inaugurated. Is the Valdosta Times satisfied? Hussars Drill. The Hussars will have a drill Tues day afternoon at 5:30 p. m. Members will not turn out iu uuiform,| but wil wear sabres. A prompt attendance is desirable. Meet in l’ark, in front of I’iney Woods hotel. K. T. Maclean, Comgd. R. R. Evans, O. S. IK. “IF” is a small word, but it is prom inent in history.
