Hammond, of Pittsburg, was in town yesterdny. Peaches have made their appear ance a tone or two of the grocery stores. Mrs. M. A. Freeman nnd children, of Camilla, were guests nt the Gulf Sunday. Mr. Lee McLendon, traveling freight agent of the S. F. & W. Ry., spent Sunday {it home. No police court was held yesterday morning. All the cases on docket were continued over until next Friday morning. Miss Eva Flotard, of Jacksonville Fla., who has been visiting Miss Emma McIntosh for a couple of weeks left yesterday for Americus. This will undoubtedly be the big week of the melon season. It the weather is ns hot everywhere, ns it is here, melons ought to bring splendid prices. Mr. Joe M. Massey, of Summer Hill was in town yesterday. Mi. Massey has been tor the past two years connected with the Florida A1 Iiance Exchange nt Jacksonville. Rev. J. W. William;, pastor of the Baptist church, left yesterday morn ing tor Kontucky to visit his wife, who is spending the summer there. He will be gone about two weeks. The Hussars will advertise the Tourney on the 4th, oxtensively in all the adjacent towns, and the cheap rates offered by the rail road, one fare for round trip, ought to draw a good crowd. The Hussars will he at their best, and ThomasviUc will entertain right royally her guests from abroad. The Thomasville Ice Manufac ing and Cold Storge Com pany. The new advertisement of this com pany appears this morning. It is the successor of theLatonia Ice Company, and Mr. W. S. Keefer, who made ‘he Latonia such a success, is president and manager of the new company. The delivery wagons of the compa ny,. have become familiar objects on our streets, nnd very welcome they are, too, dunng the hot weather. Ice is now so cheap that is in reach of ail, and that made by our home cornpnn y is chemically pure. How Much ? Of course the exact populatiqr n is not yet kuowu, and will not be, until tho nnnouucemen comes officolly from Washington, It is positively stated that the population is over double what it was 1880. Cens as taker Paine says that one of the guesses at the population, for the g old -watch, has come within one of tho correct number. The fortuitous one’s name is not known by any one except Mr. Paine, but it is certain tluit the guesses endiug with. 5 will not draw tho prizo. A good many guessed with their figures ending weth that number, because the census 1 ost time ended with five. Bad Blood. « Under date of June 26th, Mr. E. P. ecr, special correspondent of the Atlanta Journal, wires that paper as follows: A gentleman who claims to be familiar with the ancestral pedigree of Henry Cabott Lodge, the author of the inlamous election bill now under consideration, declares that his people were tories dunng the war of the revo lution; and during the war of 1812 his grandfather burned blt.e lights to pilot the British fleet out of Newport harbor at the lime the expedition was organ ized, which resulted in the capture and destruction of the national capitol. And yet this creaturr is the author of the federal election bill, and is ranting around in Washing'on, talking about the disloyalty of the south. This makes us tired. Mr. Harry Brow-j, it would appear, is anxious to use the alliance yard stick on everybody. He has applied it to Senator John G. Carlisle, of Ky. and Mr. Carlisle doesn’t measure up, In fact the slick says he is an “im becile,” and indulges in “silly vapor- ings.” There’s something wrong with Sir. Carlisle,—or that yard stick. The public will not be slow in determining which is wrong. If the man who penned the follow ing, in Sunday’s Constititution, is caught out in tho country among the rural editors, there will be a vacancy on the editorial stafl of that great and good paper: A Georgia editor, who had been in vited to lead a prayer meeting, made an exhortation ns follows: “Now, brethren, while we sing this soul m- spiring hymn, come up here and give the preacher yqur Iwnd and me yohr your money. Come while we sing!” Mr. Joe Dreyer came - down from Pelham, and spent Sunday at home. ITT. “IF” Is a small word, but it Is prom inent in history. Tho fato of nations, individuals bear its prefix.
