It begins to look as if the lottery
would win in Louisiana.
The democracy of Thomas county
should be here on the 12th. 1 he
mass meeting is an important one.
The alliancemcn should be getting
ready for another fight with the jute
trust, this season. They should give
the monopoly a big black eye.
Many of Col. Hardeman’s friends
recognize the fact that he was too
late in announcing his candidacy for
governor. Northen was too far
ahead.
If Turner should have opposition, if
some one should come out and
oppose him on the sub-treasury
plan, you can trace the movement
back to. the time when Col. Leonidas
Livingston was careering through this
district wanting to be governor—or
anything else.
The attraction at Harvard, on com
mencement day, was a negro graduate
by the name of DtiBois. His speech
was on “Jeflerson Davis as a represen
tative of civilization.”
Miss Winuie Davis sailed from Eu
rope last Saturday for home. Her
marriage, it is said, will come oft very
sood. She will begin life’s journey
with a rich dowry of love, at least,
from the Southern people.
Charles—“Were you embarrassed
when you proposed to Miss Mnny-
bcaux?” Frederic—“No. but I confess
I was put out when her father came

The action of the Warren County
Alliance cannot bo too highly com
mended. That body declined to accede
to on overture from an “adjoining
county” and unite on one man for con
gress. The Alliance scatters its influ
ence every time it becomes a political
body.
It is said that all the miners, in and
around Birmingham, Ala, will strike
for ten per cent advance to day. Fur
nace men say they will shut down.
Thousands .will be thrown out of em
ployment.
Harrison says he wants congress to
pass the federal election bill quick.
He is just itching to sign it. Such a
measure is in keeping with Harrison
statesmanship. You can coverHarri-

luspeaking of Sam Jones’sermon at
Oxford, Justice Lamar said: “It was
striking in many senses. Parts of it
were like a Pullman palace sleeping
car—capable of being hitched to any
train, going in any direction, at any
time—fitting anywhere, acting auto
matically, and capable of emanating
from no brain other than that of the
original Sam Jofles.”
And some parts of it were better
suited to a crowd of cowboys, than the
refined and intelligent audience which
Mr. Jones addressed.
Tom Woolfolk is fast wasting away.
The Macon Telegraph says: Tom
Woolfolk is a mere shadow of himself.
During the past four months he has
become so thin and emaciated that
even his most intimate acquaintances
Would not know him if they were to
tneet him outside of the- jail. In ad
dition to his emaciated condition, Tom
b suffering from a large carbuncle on
the left side of his head, which he says,
is killing him. His voice is weak and
tremulous aud has lost mnch of that
querulous nnd fretful tone which has
been such a marked feature of hiscon-
vewation heretofore.
Is it True ?
The following is taken from the
Dawson News:
'The News learns from agentleinan
high in auihorily. that delegates from
every county in this Congressional dis
trict will meet in a tew davs to select
some one to contest with Hon. H. 0.
Turner for Congressional honors.”
The News and Advertiser in inves
tigating the rumor ran across an at
lianceman, from a neighboring county.
This allianceman talked pretty freely
to the scribe. \Ye take the following
from the paper mentioned :
“On Tuesday the 24th inst, a party
of Alliancemcn held a caucus at Al
bany. One of the gentlemen who
was interesied 1.1 that caucus told me,”
said the gentlemen, “that he had call
ed the meeting with no authority of
the Alliance, but that no one but
members of the Alliance were admit
ted.
“This man told me further, that ttye
Democratic paity had done nothing
since the war but tinker with the
tariff, that it had done.nothing with that,
and now the Alliance are going to take
the matter in hand. He further said
that the Democratic party is ruled by
a party of political thieves, anyway.
“The caucus, lie said held in Albany
last Tuesday, was for the purpose . of
considering the advisability o| putting
out a candidate in the district who
will pledge himself to support the sub
treasury bill, Hon, Henry G. Turner
having said he would not.
“The result of that caucus, he said
was to submit the matter next Thurs
day to the County Alliances. On
that day all the County Alliances in the
district meet, aud if a majority of them
endorse the sub-treasury bill, the fight
will be declared against Mr. Turner,
and the Alliance candidate will be put
in the field.”
We have heard nothing about the
movement in this county. The sub-
treasury scheme is not endorsed bv all
alliancemcn. On the contrary a great
many of them do not think it practic
able. Thomas county farmers, and
they aie all democrats, have more
faith in the integrity, cool, clear head
ed judgmenr of Herry G. Turner,
than they have in the wild, visionary
schemes ot a set of men, whose only
ambition appears to be getting up
something new, something upon
which they can ride into office,

Col. Northern has not bad a rnoie
devoted champion than the Augusta
Chronicle. That journal was among
the first to espouse bin cause, and it
has stood squarely by him up to date.
But the Chronicle does not like Col.
Northen’s poeitiou, exactly, on the
sub-treasury plau. The Chronicle
has not failed to show up the weak
ness nnd utter absurdity of the sub
treasury plan. Speaking of the gu
bernatorial campaign, the Chronicle

WORKS,
snys:
There is only one weak plank in
the platform of Col. Nortiicn and
candor requires that wo should call,
attention to and emphasize our oppo
sition to it.
Wc refer to his endorsement of tho
sub-treasury scheme, or some better
measure for the relict of the people.
Of course, there is no objection to
some better plan than the sub-trea
sury bill, for there never wns a more
transparent humbug nnd absolutely
impracticable scheme presented to
Congress.
A man of Col. Northen’s intelli-
ence, a mnn who possesses the confi-
ence of the people, representing all
interests nnd classes to such a large
extent, could aflord to tell them that
the sub-treasury scheme is not only a
fraud, but would he the greatest possi
ble evil that could befall the southern
planter and farmer. . . .
Wc are thus frank in our criticism
of Col. Northen’s quasi-endorsement
of this scheme, because the Chronicle
has been his friend for many years,
and because the Chronicle wa* the first
daily in the state that endorsed him
for governor.
Northen ought to have the nerve
to repudiate this wild, visionary
scheme which Livingston aud others
are using to boost themselves into of
fice.
